2 BIO studied at the Lille Conservatory Studied under Massenet (french composer) at the Paris Conservatoire, where he won the Prix de Rome in 1887. 1902-founded the Conservatoire Populaire de Mimi Pinson (free school of music and classical dance for working people)

3 Operas and other works Louise (1900)– opera Julien (1913)– opera Impressions d'Italie (1892)—orchestral suite Les Impressions fausses (1895)– voice and orchestra Chant d'Apothéose (1902)—written for the Victor Hugo centenary. Didon (1887)– cantata that won him the Prix de Rome La Vie du poète (1892)— cantata Fête du couronnement de la Muse (later used in Louise)– symphonic drama Sérénade à Watteau (1896)—for voice and orchestra

4 Louise Produced by the Opera-Comique and premeired on February 2, 1900 under the baton of Andre Messager ( head of the Opéra-Comique, the Paris Opéra, the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, and of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden ). Charpentier composed songs using texts by Charles Baudelaire ( poet ) and Voltaire ( poet ). Depicts the Parisian working-class life sound recording of the abridged score made in studio conducted by Eugene Bigot. 1939 film adaptation was shot with actress Grace Moore as the title role. “Depuis le jour”– a popular soprano aria used by many in recitals
