3. There are all types of restaurants in Germany; especially in big cities like Berlin. Italian Turkish German Indian American Mexican (Just don’t expect it to be good)

4. Restaurants-things to keep in mind An actual restaurant is the chance to use more formal ordering z.B. “Ich hätte gern…” “Ich möchte…” There is no such thing as free refills. Your fork should stay in your left hand and knife in your right Your napkin doesn‘t have to go on your lap

5. Pizza It will not be sliced When eating pizza, you cut it into bite- sized pieces with your fork and knife. Leaving a tip is NOT necessary  But, you can give the server the change  For example, your bill is 18€ and you want to leave a tip, give the server a 20 and say „Stimmt so.“

6. Café Cafes are also a chance for you to use more formal language. The same rules apply here as for the restaurant. When in doubt, watch what the Germans are doing!!!

7. Schnellimbiss

8. Schnellimbiss is like the original German fast food before globalization  i.e. no McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, etc. Consists of things like Bratwurst, Döner, China Box, Currywurst, and stuff from a Bäckerei. All cost 3€ or less

9. Currywurst Currywurst mit Pommes Ketchup und Mayo  Ordering Currywurst is more casual than at a restaurant. „Einmal Currywurst mit Pommes und Mayo, bitte“

10. Döner Mit den Türken kam auch der Döner. Türkisches Fladenbrot Gemüse Soße Und FLEISCH!! Ordering a Döner is also casual.

11. Dönerladen in der Yorckstraße, Berlin

14. Bratwurst You‘ll find these street vendors selling Bratwurst in bigger cities. They are literally wearing a grill that they cook on. Best part is, they‘re cheap! Ordering these is also causal.

15. Die Bäckerei

16. Bakeries are a great place to get food on the go. They‘ve got sandwiches, pastries, Brötchen, Bretzeln, and more! Ordering is kind of formal  „Ich möchte ein Stück Bienenstich, bitte.“

17. Das Fastfood If you ever need American food, you‘re in luck.

18. German Fast Food There are some German fast food chains like Nordsee. If you like fish, Nordsee is for you!

19. Even Tex-Mex! This is Dolores California Burrito not too far from Alexander Platz in Berlin.

20. This is the only place with good Mexican food that I have ever found in Germany.

22. Eiscafe

23. Can be super polite „Ich hätte gern...“ but you don‘t have to be z.B. „Ich hätte gern eine Kugel Schokolade in einer Waffel“ Be specific.  If you want two scoops together, say so!  If you want two scopes separate, say it!

29. DU BIST DRAN! Create groups of 3-4 students. Using Frau Lindsay’s menus for “Café Freizeit”, each of you practice the role of the Kellner and the patron. Take at least 2 times in each role!
