3.  Live in a fairly remote area of northwestern B.C  Population of 5500  Self-government  Wanted a treaty to be part of Canadian Society- no racial based laws ABOUT THE NISGA’A

After 24 years of negotiating…  $196.1 million dollars (in 1999 dollars);  2,019 square kilometers of land;  a water reservation for domestic, agricultural and industrial purposes;  allowed to operate their own government, and to create certain laws; and,  Got funding to help give health, education, and social services to their members and other people living in the area.  Frees Nisga’a from the Indian Act THE TREATY

6.  The treaty represents an understanding between two cultures and ways of life  We are settling historical wrongs and showing that we can change mistakes from the past  Minorities are still respected  It represents hope to other indigenous communities and communities around the world HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
