University of Jyväskylä Research Evaluation 2000–2004 General Results – Recommendations Dr. Antoaneta Folea Research Evaluation Coordinator Research and Careers Department antoaneta.folea@adm.jyu.fi

2/2005 2006 General Results – Recommendations  Research Strategy  Publications  Publications  Doctoral, postdoctoral training  Doctoral, postdoctoral training  International visibility, European funding  International visibility, European funding

2/2005 2006 General results – Research Overall, high standard of the research community – many points of excellence and great promise  original and innovative  The core research is highly original and innovative  emergent fields frontier of knowledge  There are multidisciplinary emergent fields, research areas at the frontier of knowledge  excellent  Research groups: excellent, well established as national and international high-level contributors  cutting-edge technology  The research involves cutting-edge technology  equipment and infrastructure  Very high level of equipment and infrastructure for research

2006 A research strategy at departmental level is missing However, General results: Research strategy   have clear realistic goals   have innovative vision   are well integrated into a common mission of the department   work together to develop a stronger research synergy Research units (disciplines):

2006 General results: Doctoral training Overall, the extent and quality of doctoral training is good Good interaction with supervisors Excellent infrastructure for research Support for participating in conferences

2006 Recommendations: Research strategy  reduced and more focused  Too many research topics; these should be reduced and more focused  international networking  More international networking at departmental level  identifying and balancing priorities  More formal mechanisms for identifying and balancing priorities  Optimize time and resources synergy between teaching and research activities  Optimize time and resources (better planning of time devoted to teaching, administrative and research tasks). More synergy between teaching and research activities should be aimed at  self-assessment and evaluation  Develop continuous self-assessment and evaluation procedures and international benchmarks  made known publicly, raising awareness  The research activities and results should be made known publicly, raising awareness inside and outside the scientific community  web pages  Faculties and departments should have web pages with information about their research, which is vital to participate in the international community

2006 Recommendations: Publication strategy  Clear publication strategy  Clear publication strategy at the level of each Faculty and Department  top-ranked international journals  The researchers must publish (publish more) in top-ranked international journals  co-publishing with international partners  More co-publishing with international partners  publications performance measurement system  There should be introduced a clear and transparent publications performance measurement system; this would enable the researchers to clearly put more weight on internationally recognized high-quality publications

2006 Recommendations: Doctoral training – Postdoctoral activities  Admissions strategya greater selectivity  Admissions strategy should be implemented - a greater selectivity in the choice of graduate students  formal system of monitoring progress  A more formal system of monitoring progress might be helpful in reducing completion times  full financial coverage of their 4-year  The PhD students should be provided with full financial coverage of their 4-year doctoral studies  seminars and courses  Faculties should organize seminars and courses for all their PhD students, where students can develop skills, present their work, develop both their future employability and their generic research competences  continuity in supervision  Strategies to guarantee continuity in supervision research and teaching during transition periods of staff should be in place

2006 Recommendations: Doctoral training Postdoctoral activities  international students  More international students should be attracted, and European funding schemes (e.g. Erasmus, Socrates) should be used  overproduction of PhD’s maintain high standards  General concern about overproduction of PhD’s. For this reason, Faculties should maintain high standards so that the University of Jyväskylä is branded by the excellence of students and the excellent research the students produce  track the careers of doctoral graduates  The Faculties and the Departments should track the careers of doctoral graduates and maintain close contacts with them to evaluate long-term performance  absence of post-docfinancial mechanismsat national level  The structure of all of the research teams suffers from a common weakness: the absence of post-doc researchers. For this, financial mechanisms should be put in place at national level

2006 Recommendations: Internationalization – European funding In order to gain international visibility and recognition in the international community : clear set of research goals  A continuous development of a clear set of research goals and objectives for the individual groups critical mass  A dedication of a critical mass of researchers to the accomplishment of each of the research goals high quality refereed journals  Targeting high quality refereed journals for research publications international collaboration with leading academics and experts  The development of increasing international collaboration with leading academics and experts in the critical research areas

2006 Recommendations: Internationalization – European funding international visiting academicsgreatly increased In order to build long-term collaboration relationships and to obtain continuous feedback, input, and new ideas, the number of international visiting academics needs to be greatly increased more European funds Faculties and Departments must attract more European funds assistance and support The University should provide assistance and support through the European funding process
