ETT 229 Fall 2004 Web Design Basics III

Agenda 11:00-11:05 – Quiz 15 11:05-11:40 – Web Design Lecture 11:40-12:15 – Web Design Practice 3

File Management Review Web design is not like Office when it comes to file management Files inserted or linked to web page are not automatically there Remember, a web pages is just the directions (e.g., make this text blue, download this image, put the image there)

Link Type Review Three major link types Absolute – A link inside of an HTML document that refers to another document by it's FULL name e.g., http://www.niu.edu/http://www.niu.edu/ Relative - A link inside of an HTML document that refers to a document in relation to the current document. For example,../images/seal.gif is a relative link. (contrast with absolute link). Anchored (within document) – A link inside of an HTML document that links one part of the document to another part within the same document (often used in long pages or pages with many sections).

Links Review – Part 2 Creating a link Can be any of three types Either type in absolute link or choose file Email links mailto: command e.g., mailto:burke@niu.edu

Publishing Web Pages Activating your NIU website http://www.its.niu.edu/its/CSupport/student.shtml Go to this link and follow directions Login Under student utilities – “Activate My Personal Webspace” ITS student utilities https://www.students.niu.edu/provisioning/main.p hp Link found under NIU  Current Students  ITS Student Utilities

WWW folder Once you have activated your account A WWW folder will appear in your ZID drive Any files put in this folder will be available to the web To get the URL for your web page, you add /~ and then your z-id to www.students.niu.eduwww.students.niu.edu e.g., www.students.niu.edu/~z123456www.students.niu.edu/~z123456 Default file = index.html (not index.htm) Likewise, if you create folders within your www directory, the default page for each folder is index.html.

Basics of web publishing Upload Download Server Personal Computer (PC) FTP – File Transfer Protocol PCServer Uploading Downloading FTP

Steps in Uploading On your PC 1. Make/edit the webpage 2. Save the webpage 3. Preview the webpage (still on your PC) 4. If correct, then go to step 5, if incorrect go back to step 1 Upload from PC to Server 5. Copy file from PC to WWW folder in ZID drive using Windows Explorer

Caveat Be aware: It can be confusing to have different versions of the same file exist (one on the server and one on your computer) Once you copy over a file, the other one is gone forever (no take-backs) Therefore, be careful when you upload/download

To FTP from home (optional) TO FTP from home using Mozilla, follow steps listed on this ITS website: http://www.its.niu.edu/its/helpdesk/docum entation/mozilla_web_pages.shtml
