2 English In what countries of the world is English spoken (as a first language?) We learn English to communicate with people in these countries. –What other reasons? (2 or 3) Apart from English, what other major languages are there? Should everyone learn to speak one language? If so, which one?

3 Chinese What languages are spoken in Taiwan? What languages or dialects do you speak? How do people in Taiwan decide when to speak Mandarin, and when to speak Taiwanese? Has the role of Taiwanese (and Hakka) changed in recent decades? What about the indigenous languages of Taiwan? (1- 6:45)

4 Choose 1 or 2 Is it more difficult… for a Taiwanese person to learn English for an English native speaker to learn Mandarin? How do people in Taiwan decide when to speak Mandarin, and when to speak Taiwanese?

6 Thursday class Choose two words –One on-topic (e.g. police) –One not on-topic (e.g. car) Make 4 word sketches –2 from UKWaC –2 from your large WBC corpus Comment on (1 paragraph) 1.What kind of collocations you expected to find in the word sketches 2.What collocations you actually find Email your paragraph and selected word sketches by Monday.

7 Borrowing Lots of languages borrow extensively from English You can probably think of many words in Chinese… how about the other way round? Phonetic loans –Sound the same Calque –Skyscraper  gratte-ciel (fr), Wolkenkratzer (de), 摩天樓 (zh) –Brainwash, runway (can you say why?)

8 Borrowing Make two lists. 1: English  Chinese, 2: Chinese  English Try and think of calque loans too How about words in Chinese borrowed from other languages? Describe how English is used, in Taiwan, between Taiwanese people. Is it always necessary?

9 Learning Answer question 9. In your group, in how many languages can you –Say simple greetings? –Count to ten? –Ask for something (a coffee, or a bus ticket) Is it more difficult… –for a Taiwanese person to learn English –For an English native speaker to learn Mandarin? –(you might make a list of pros and cons on both sides, and try to reach a conclusion)
