Motivation What really happens when sport objects are thrown/hit/caught? What control attributes affect accuracy, distance? How can object data be repeatedly captured, analyzed, and turned into useful feedback to players? MEMS will provide the answer  New accelerometers and gyroscopes are small and tough enough to embed into sports equipment and measure event characteristics  Coupled with the right processor, software, and communication hardware, an unprecedented platform for data analysis emerges

Competitive Analysis Very new area, only niche products  RevFire Baseball/Softball Measures RPM and pitch speed RF communication with handheld display unit Expensive, single-use battery, cannot withstand shock  Flying Tach Frisbee Measures RPM and flight time On-board display No agnostic platform capable of multi-axis capture and analysis

Requirements Multi-axis data capture Small, low-power design  Fit in almost any sport object  Last for majority of period/quarter/inning/half High Shock Tolerance Simple UI Reliable data capture, logging, and communication Wireless power and communication are highly desired

Hardware! Processor  Arduino Pro Mini 328 MEMS Sensors  Invensense IDG-500 Dual-Axis Gyro  Analog Devices ADXL-345 Tri-Axis Accelerometer Memory  MicroSD for up to 2GB storage  Easy transfer to personal computer for offline analysis Battery  LiPoly for small size, high power density  Inductive charging?

Future Directions Profile sports to determine minimum data required -> less/cheaper parts, code efficiency, introduce real-time analysis & feedback Create our own custom integrated PCB  Smaller size, lower weight  Lower cost, sports-specific solutions? Truly wireless operation  “Dock” with inductive charging and short-range RF communication for data transfer  Enables seamless embedding into sports objects
