1 REGIONS AND NETWORKS INTRODUCTORY LECTURE Instituto Superior Técnico / Masters in Civil Engineering – Regions and Networks Instituto Superior Técnico Masters in Urban Studies and Territorial Management REGIÕES E REDES (REGIONS AND NETWORKS) Introductory Lecture Prof. Filipe Moura

2 REGIONS AND NETWORKS INTRODUCTORY LECTURE Instituto Superior Técnico / Masters in Civil Engineering – Regions and Networks OBJECTIVES OF THE DISCIPLINE r Understanding the key concepts on:  Catchment areas for facilities and demand thresholds for their sustainability  Location theories, agglomeration economies, urban networks  Interaction between accessibility and land use structures  Cooperation and innovation networks and economic development r And develop skills on the use of computational models for  Competition between facilities and levels of territorial coverage  Evaluation of the topological structure and operational performance of transport networks and introductory concepts on the optimization of the design and expansion of those networks

3 REGIONS AND NETWORKS INTRODUCTORY LECTURE Instituto Superior Técnico / Masters in Civil Engineering – Regions and Networks TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS r Teachers present a topic  Main concepts  Bibliography  Computational tools  Case studies / problems r Students are expected to:  Read the bibliography and share / discuss the key issues with the class  Learn how to use the computational tools  Obtain the relevant data for the problems  Solve the problems and prepare a report  Present and discuss the problem and solution in class

4 REGIONS AND NETWORKS INTRODUCTORY LECTURE Instituto Superior Técnico / Masters in Civil Engineering – Regions and Networks PROBLEM TYPES TO BE ANALIZED r Topic 1 - Transport networks design and evaluation  Evaluation of design, operational performance and reliability of transport networks, considering individual and collective objectives  Economic justification of using different road hierarchies and intermodal transportation  Explore the concept of accessibility and develop indicators  Analyse the interaction between land-use and transport networks r Topic 2 - Public facilities and services dimensioning  Delimit the catchment areas of public facilities and services, degradation of demand with access costs, possibility of substitution  Fixed and variable costs in operations are considered to define demand thresholds for economic sustainability r Topic 3 - Regional economic impact of private/public investments/Economy of knowledge  Location theories for economic activities considering resources and markets. Agglomeration economies. Urban networks, their missions and hierarchical configurations  Cooperation and innovation as the structuring flows in the networks of the Economy of Knowledge

5 REGIONS AND NETWORKS INTRODUCTORY LECTURE Instituto Superior Técnico / Masters in Civil Engineering – Regions and Networks WORKING PROCESS FOR EACH TOPIC/PROBLEM Theory LecturesRecitations 1 st Lecture  Presentation of the topic  Framework of analysis  Key points  Recommended bibliography 1 st Lecture  Presentation of the case study (examples)  Main sources and concerns for data acquisition 2 nd Lecture  Presentation of the bibliography read by the students and discussion 2 nd Lecture  Computational tools presentation  Laboratory work with some examples 3 rd Lecture  Systematic presentation and synthesis of the topic 3 rd Lecture  Support to students in the case study analysis 4 th Lecture  Case study presentation and discussion by the students* 4 th Lecture  Case study presentation and discussion by the students* *A draft report in digital format should be delivered to the teaching team 48 hours before the groups presentation. After the presentation the groups will have one week to deliver a final report and presentation in digital format.

6 REGIONS AND NETWORKS INTRODUCTORY LECTURE Instituto Superior Técnico / Masters in Civil Engineering – Regions and Networks EVALUATION PROCESS r Work done during the semester – 70% weight in final score  Bibliography analysis of each topic – 30% weight in the semester score  Presentation and discussion during the class  Case studies/Problems – 70% weight in the semester score  Data acquisition  Problem analysis and solving  Oral presentation and discussion  Participation on the discussion in the case studies of other groups presentation  Final report  All the work during the semester will be done in small groups (2-3 students) r Individual Written Exam – 30% weight in final score r In both evaluations a minimum score of 8.0 (on 20) is needed to avoid failure

7 REGIONS AND NETWORKS INTRODUCTORY LECTURE Instituto Superior Técnico / Masters in Civil Engineering – Regions and Networks SCHEDULE OF EVENTS r 1 st Case Study - Transport networks design and evaluation  From September 17 th to October 1 st  Final presentation and discussion – October 8 th r 2 nd Case Study - Public facilities and services dimensioning  From October 11 th to November 8 th  Final presentation and discussion – November 8 th r 3 rd Case Study - Regional impact of private investment  From November 12 th to December 6 th  Final presentation and discussion – December 6 th r December 10 th – Revisions before final exam (not yet determined)
