Silver Moles Objectives –To react copper and silver nitrate and obtain silver and copper(II) nitrate –To measure the masses of the reactants and products –To determine mole ratio between copper and silver

Results Data Mass of Beaker Mass of AgNO3 crystals Initial mass of Cu Final mass of Cu Mass of reacted Cu Mass of Ag

Day 2 Lift and shake copper wire into beaker; try to have any remaining residue on wire go into the beaker Dip copper wire in beaker of acetone and place on paper towel to dry. Record mass of final copper Pour solution portion from beaker into another beaker. Rinse remaining crystals with water; last rinse with water + 1 drop of ammonia (6M). Pour out solution portion, saving the crystals Place in oven to dry overnight.

Day 3 Get beaker with Ag out of oven. Obtain and record mass of beaker + silver Clean up

Calculations From the mass of copper (initial and final) and silver, calculate the moles of copper and silver. From the moles of each substance, determine the ratio of moles between the copper and silver. Use mole relationships to write experimental balanced equation for reaction.

Conclusions 1. Label this type of chemical reaction and write a balanced equation for the reaction. 2. What is the experimental mole ratio of copper to silver? Theoretical mole ratio? 3. How do you know which copper solution formed? 4. Given the starting mass of silver nitrate, how much silver COULD you have produced? How does it compare to what you DID produce?

Summary Restate objectives Evidence of chemical reaction? Ratio of copper to silver? Limitations/ sources of error –Be very specific and thorough with generalizing results and discussing limitations.
