2 What is Protecting You/Protecting Me? (PY/PM) A prevention curriculum for students in grades 1-5 Incorporating the latest research on children’s brains and the developmental risks associated with exposure to alcohol before the age of 21

3 The Goal of PY/PM To prevent injury and death of children and youth due to: –Underage consumption of alcoholic beverages –Vehicle-related risks, especially as passengers in vehicles in which the driver is not alcohol-free

4 PY/PM in American Indian Schools PY/PM in American Indian Schools in Northern Nebraska Schools serve mostly American Indian students from 3 tribes: –Umo Ho Nation –Winnebago –Santee Sioux

5 The Importance of Cultural Tailoring Curricula developed for non-native youth has limited success with native students Curricula often lacks sensitivity to the cultures of the students served Cultural Tailoring adapts existing model programs to better serve native youth
