4 Subject and Scope Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark – To provide interoperability specifications for a range of information exchange, initially aimed at school systems but also applicable in a wider lifelong learning context. This work item will support the outputs of the OASIS (Open Architecture and Schools in Society) project that enable different applications and systems to share information. – The work item will focus on collaborating with the OASIS partners in ensuring that the specifications they produce do not duplicate international standards activity, are appropriate for a broader audience and are suitable for e-Europe standardization.

5 Expected deliverables A CEN Workshop Agreement, consisting of one or more parts, that provides Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems. CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

7 The OASIS project OASIS objectives – The development of a technical network. It consists of setting up both local and regional open telematics and informatics architecture for the school educational network together with zonal servers available to meet the needs of automated maintenance of these school networks. – Its aim is to simultaneously integrate a set of data models together with the organizational structures of this data, thus favouring the interoperability between educational networks. CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

8 The OASIS project. Workpackages (i) WP1- Requirements & Validation Responsible: Ulf Lundin, Henk Sligte (Universiteit van Amsterdam ??) – WP 1.1 User requirements – WP 1.2 Collaborative Learning – WP 1.1- It will identify future school requirements and correlate them with Actual and Future Needs and Plans of European Ministries of Education. – WP 1.2- It will define and test in pilots different pedagogical models for collaborative ICT learning. CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

9 The OASIS project. Workpackages (ii) WP2- Interoperability, Standardisation and Harmonisation. Responsible: Rogelio Segovia (Spanish Ministry of Education) It will study architectures and will Investigate SIF (Schools Interoperability Framework) for the evaluation and possible implementation in Europe. It will make recommendations for adoption for the School Networks. CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

10 The OASIS project. Workpackages (iii) WP3- Open Code Software Library Responsible: Ángel Fernández (DIT, Polytechnic University of Madrid) It will implement the Web Library of Open SW supported with harvesting and metadata tools cataloguing. Address to both Software professionals and teacher authors, it also include a Distribution and Training System. CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

11 The OASIS project. Workpackages (iv) WP4- Examples of OASIS Components Responsible: Ángel Fernández (Polytechnic University of Madrid), Philippe Trautmann (Sun) and Fredrik Paulsson (Swedish Ministry of Education) – WP 4.1 Zone Server – WP 4.2 School Server – WP 4.3 Java based Kernel It will define OASIS architectures and will develop prototypes of three key elements to check in practice WP2 specifications, and to validate with users in WP 5 Pilot. CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

12 The OASIS project. Workpackages (v) WP5- Architectural & Technological Pilots Responsible: Agustín Muñoz (Spanish Ministry of Education) Josiane Morel (Apple), Philippe Trautmann (Sun) and Pierre Rostaing (Académie de Grenoble) – WP 5.1 Zone Server – WP 5.2 School Server – WP 5.3 Wireless & Ubiquity “Put in Practice & Show” pilots that in addition of WP4 prototypes will implements wireless technologies and ubiquity, to integrate the schools and local communities. Ministries represented in the European Schoolnet will be aware of the evaluation and will have the tools to decide upon implementing the results into their school networks. CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

13 The OASIS project. Workpackages (vi) WP6- Dissemination and exploitation Responsible: Ulf Linden (Universiteit van Amsterdam ??) It spreads the knowledge of the project, and the developments done. It prepares the way of exploitation of the project and to reach a consensus on the sustainability of the project among the partners CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

14 The OASIS project. Workpackages (vii) WP7- Project management Responsible: Agustín Quintana (Spanish Ministry of Education) It provides internal management and both financial and administrative control of the project. It also plannes external cooperation and communication. CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

15 The OASIS project. Output So far, the Académie de Grenoble has delivered XML Schemas for: – School model – Student model – Teacher model – Pedagogy model – Partner model – SIF CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

16 Discussion on objectives (i) Provide guidelines to OASIS partners to ensure that: – The specifications they produce do not duplicate international standards activity. – The specifications are appropriate for a broader audience. – The specifications are suitable for e-Europe standardization CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

17 Discussion on objectives (ii) versus Provide interoperability specifications for a range of information exchange, initially aimed at schools systems but also applicable in a wider lifelong learning context. – Overlap with the OASIS project. CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

18 Discussion on objectives (iii) The PT opinion is to focus on the first set of objectives: To drive OASIS partners and produce guidelines to optimize their work according to existing standards, e-Europe standardization interests and a wider audience. CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, 10-11 December 2002, Copenhagen, Denmark Interoperability frameworks for exchange of information between diverse management systems

19 Discussion on objectives (iv) The PT suggests to: 1. Study the SIF spec v1.1 (step 1) 2. Suggest ways to adapt it to a European context (step 2) from the following perspective: – The specifications they produce do not duplicate international standards activity. – The specifications are appropriate for a broader audience. – The specifications are suitable for e-Europe standardization 3. Delivery to OASIS (step 3) 4. Feedback from OASIS (step 4) 5.
