The Research and Education Network for Asia-Pacific TEIN3 (Trans-Eurasia Information Network 3) International Workshop in Space Observation Techniques for Monitoring Global Earth Dynamics Bandung, Indonesia 13-14 July 2011 Basuki Suhardiman Institut Teknologi Bandung

The Research and Education Network for Asia-Pacific SLIDE 2 Research Networks – providing new opportunities for global collaboration in all fields Research networking started in early 1990’s to offer high speed, high quality Internet connections for research and education: National level, run by National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), usually publicly funded Increasing regional level networks e.g. GEANT, connecting all major European academic and research centres, and TEIN3 for Asia Pacific During last 5 - 10 years emergence of inter-regional links for global cooperation TEIN3 provides regional and global links for Asia-Pacific researchers

The Research and Education Network for Asia-Pacific SLIDE 3 TEIN3 Network 2008 - 2012 18 Asian partners 14 so far connected 10 receiving EC funding support 45M+ connected users 4 hubs: Mumbai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing Fastest Internet links for research within Asia Fastest and highest capacity direct Internet links for research with Europe - Direct links to GÉANT create a potential user base of more than 80 million Managed by not-for-profit research networking experts DANTE, which also operates GÉANT. 11.4M Euro EC funding (65% co-funding) Non-commercial use only

The Research and Education Network for Asia-Pacific SLIDE 5 An ASEM Success Story continues The success of TEIN2 was celebrated at the ASEM6 Summit in Finland, which marks “10 Years of ASEM: Global Challenges – Joint Responses”. TEIN3 already connects researchers and academics in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia and Laos are in the process of getting connected,. “Collaboration between Europe and Asia is increasingly critical to solving global issues, such as climate change and health threats such as avian influenza and HIV/AIDS.” “TEIN2 is bridging the digital divide within Asia-Pacific, and it is already delivering opportunities and benefits to the citizens of both regions. We expect this success to continue as it expands.” ASEM3 Summit (Seoul, 2000) endorsed TEIN as a new ASEM Initiative upon the co-proposal by Korea, Singapore and European Commission (EC) “Under the theme of “Partnership for Prosperity and Stability in the New Millennium”

The Research and Education Network for Asia-Pacific SLIDE 6 ASEM8 Endorsement (October 2010) - TEIN4 and TEIN* Cooperation Center - ASEM8 Chair’s Statement : (http://www.asem8.be/asem-8-chairs-statement-and-brussels-declaration)http://www.asem8.be/asem-8-chairs-statement-and-brussels-declaration (page 18) 79. Leaders recognized the important role played by the Trans-Eurasian Information Network (TEIN) project in increasing direct internet connectivity among research and education in Asia and between Asia and Europe. They welcomed the planned launch of its 4th phase and the establishment of a Cooperation Center hosted by the Republic of Korea with financial contributions from participating ASEM partners. 7 The Research and Education Network for Asia-Pacific SLIDE 7 TEIN3 success stories Natural disaster warning and post-crisis support Crop research Tele-surgical training, Medical tele-consultations Virtual lectures, eSocial Science Key Applications

The Research and Education Network for Asia-Pacific SLIDE 8 Case Study Data Intensive Collaborative Crop Research: New Rice Varieties Work on genes done at the International Rice Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines International collaboration to develop resilient, climate-proof crop varieties. Marker-assisted selection used to develop water tolerant enhanced rice. Vast genomics datasets created, analysed, and exchanged. High-resolution GIS data for Vegetation analysis, Yield forecast, sustainable land, water management Over 60% of the population in Cambodia rely on agriculture for their livelihoods and rice is principal crop. NRENs & TEIN3 contribute to food security.

The Research and Education Network for Asia-Pacific SLIDE 9 GÉANT and TEIN3 provide a stable and reliable connection between the expertise and high-speed computing capacity of the German weather bureau DWD and the meteorologists at its counterparts in the Philippines. Timely transmission of global meteorological data to make local prediction of typhoons. Typhoon Ketsana struck Cambodia in 2009. High-speed networking: saving lives by typhoon forecasting Typhoon forecasting Case Study Collaborative Projects with high societal impact, Disaster Warning

The Research and Education Network for Asia-Pacific SLIDE 10 First Thai Earth Observation Satellite Launch 1 Oct 2008 with Polar Orbit ~14/day Polar station at Esrange Space Centre, Kiruna, run by Swedish Space Corporation Main control, processing & data archive centre run by GISTDA in Bangkok, Thailand. MoU signed with DANTE Link Kiruna-SSC-Stockholm to connect to SUNET expected in a month File transfer: Emergency & Disaster, flood, forest fire Case Study Earth Observation, THEOS

The Research and Education Network for Asia-Pacific SLIDE 11 Art Exchange Ancient musical instruments on stage in Stockholm (Grids used to reconstruct) Dance: Water-stone power symbolism Choreographed on traditional Malaysian movements & costumes Dancers in Kuala Lumpur Epigonium Barbiton Worked with NRENs on testing the link PoC for transmitting Audio & Video over 10,000 km latency ~500ms. Case Study GEANT & TEIN3 join cultures through music & dance, Launch performance
