GENDER AND TECHNOLOGY ArcView GIS PROJECT GOAL: To become familiar with the Geography GIS program ArcView, which most secondary schools use in order to incorporate “new” technologies in the field of study, known as, Geotechnology.

What is this thing called GIS? In a nutshell… GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems and as a software program it is designed to display, analyze, modify, and store spatial data about places on earth ArcView is a GIS program created by ESRI, a leader in GIS technology software

So What did you really do? -getting a copy of the software…not so easy -playing around with the software with no help…hard -doing some basic tutorials…harder than expected UNTIL… “Geography and GIS: GIS Activities for Students” By Todd Pottle But still a problem with lack of data software

My ArcView Assignment SPECIFIC PROJECT GOAL: To create 3-4 lesson plans for the Grade 9 Academic/Applied Geography of Canada course using ArcView TO DATE: Lesson Plan 1: Canada Map and the Capital Cities create a data set using latitude and longitude references

Lesson 2: Acid Rain An excerpt from my lesson plan: Acid rain is a major form of pollution in many industrial societies. Through this exercise, you will: · Learn what acid rain is. · Learn how acid rain affects Canada. · Learn how to manipulate Views and Themes · Learn how to create a map using an external database file · Create a Layout.

Keeping it simple… With the Project Window open, select the View icon, and click on the New button. This brings up a new View Document. Notice that the menus and buttons at the top of the ArcView window have changed. Select the Add Theme button. You will see the Add Theme dialog box. Navigate your way to the directory that contains the lpdb.shp (on the ArcCanada CD-ROM, the path would be \canada\lpdb.shp). Select lpdb.shp and click OK. Turn on the Lpdb.shp theme and examine what you see. Still trying to copy and input the smart buttons into my text

Final Results Still to Come: 2 lessons: settlement and earthquakes

Considering Gender Considerations: -making the instructions very user friendly by adding smart button images, screenshots, bolded terms etc. -both genders are not familiar with ArcView, so both going through initial learning progress of program -maybe making some changes in the computer lab ??? What I noticed so far…the girls in my courses are just as comfortable with the pc’s as the guys. But that doesn’t mean they are choosing tech courses
