Basic Geometry A learning of basic geometrical properties and identities as they apply to general mathematics and the real world

Objectives Understand, describe, and apply the concepts of symmetry, similarity, and congruence. Explore properties of geometric figures using coordinate representation Use inductive and deductive reasoning to discover and verify properties of figures. Classify figures in terms of congruence and similarity and apply these relationships

More Objectives Investigate, explore, and describe the geometry in nature and real-world applications using models, manipulatives, and appropriate technology The students will learn to work in groups to solve mathematical problems

Concepts Basic understanding of Area, perimeter, and angle formulae Understanding, uses, and applications of the Cartesian Plane Shape similarity and congruence definitions and their application to squares, triangles, etc…

Teaching Techniques Use of Jigsaw II format for group learning inside and outside of classroom (Robert Slavin) After school study group for students Lunch group for students who perform poorly Conscious attempt to avoid gender biasing in classroom

Application At beginning of class each day students will complete review worksheet Homework each day is a worksheet centered on the lesson learned each day During class students must use concepts learned in class to complete problems on the chalk/white board (still in groups)

Activity Students will complete a poster project –First students must use concepts learned in class to solve real world geometrical problems –Students will create a poster showing the real world problems they solved using concepts from class –Students will affix basic properties where applicable in their real life solutions –Students will present their poster to the class

Evaluation Students will be marked on their improvement from the beginning homework sheets to the final sheets Students will be graded on their poster projects –Use of geometrical identities –Computational accuracy –Applicability of concepts to real life situations chosen

Plan for One week course ConceptsActivitiesEvaluation Day 1 Introduction to basic shapes Review worksheet and chalk board problems Base grade for homework sheets Day 2 Basic concepts of the congruency and similarity along with def. Review worksheetImprovement from day 1 Day 3 The Cartesian plane and relations to geometrical shapes Review worksheetImprovement from day 2 Day 4 Area, perimeter and angle equations and def. Review worksheetImprovement from day 3 Day 5 NonePresentation of projects Improvement from day 4 and presentation grade

Classroom Setup Desk order and shape Allocation of student seating –Basis in Jigsaw II –Relationship with first worksheet –Effort and evaluation
