15 Paper and Layout Paper weight: Use matching paper for resumes and cover letters (rag bond, textured, etc.) Color: Use white, off-white, tan, beige, or light gray to achieve a professional, businesslike appearance Spacing: Center your resume on the page leaving adequate “ white space. ” Make sure top and bottom margins are equal.

E-mail Plain text copy specifically formatted for length-of-line restrictions in e- mail

18 To E-mail Your Resume Or Cut And Paste It Into A Web-based Form Remove all special formatting, including bold, italics, and special characters. Align all text to the left margin. Make sure your headings are in ALL CAPS, to set apart the different resume sections. Use plain text format Limit each line to 65 characters including spaces.

19 Deliver A Perfect e-Resume Take your e-resume out for a test drive e-mail your resume to yourself and to a friend to detect problems or errors to make sure it looks right on the screen and prints correctly Make a back-up disk hard drive hard copies

21 Resume Scanning Do not underline or use italics (capitalized and bold are ok.) Do not fold or staple your resume. Do not us a font smaller than 10 point. Do not use unusual fonts (Helvetica, Arial, or Times work best.) Always send originals Use light colored paper and dark ink. High contrast is most desirable. Leave one space between an asterisk (*) or a plus (+) and the following word (no bullets.) Use KEYWORDS: SPECIALIZED NOUNS important in the job you want. Only your name should be on the top line of the resume.
