1 Lab 17 Goals and Objectives: Exercise 6: Protozoans, Algae, and Cyanobacteria Observe representative members of various phyla on wet mount and prepared slides, know by name not phylum: Amoeba (pseudopods for motility) Fig 6.1#6 Paramecium (cilia for motility) Fig 6.1#9 Trypanosoma (flagella for motility) not in book Trichomonas (flagella for motility) not in book Plasmodium (non motile intracellular pathogen) not in book Euglena (flagella for motility) Fig 6.2#1&2 Spirogyra (filamentous green algae) Fig 6.4#14 Diatoms Fig 6.6 Dinoflagellate (flagellated algae) Fig 6.3#11 Anabaena (Cyanobacteria: Prokaryote not Eukaryote!) Fig 6.7#1-3 Make and observe wet mounts of pond sample to identify “creatures”: usually contains nice diatoms, green algae, and cyanobacteria!

2 ProtozoaAlgae Amoeba (pseudopods) Paramecium (cilia) Trypanosoma (flagella) Plasmodium (non-motile intracellular parasite) Prokaryote-Bacteria (Note no organelles are visible in this prokaryote. Most of the above protozoa and algae eukaryotes have clearly visible organelles) Euglena (flagella) Spirogyra (Green algae) Dinoflagellate Diatom Anabaena Cyanobacteria *Color version available at http://www2.sunysuffolk.edu/czuraa/ Trichomonas (flagella)

3 Flagellates Figure 6.1 Amoebae Ciliates

4 Figure 6.2 Flagellated euglenoids Figure 6.3 Flagellated algae Figure 6.4 Filamentous algae Figure 6.5 Nonfilamentous, nonflagellated algae Figure 6.6 Diatoms Figure 6.7 Cyanobacteria: Prokaryotes!!! (really big ones)
