3 The role of clinical senates Variation in approach across England  proactive to reactive  38 projects in one senate  Northern England at reactive end but viewed positively National Clinical Advisory Team role

4 The role of clinical senates Supporting health economies to improve health outcomes of their local communities by providing evidence-based clinical advice to commissioners and providers on major service changes. They should bring together clinicians and managers, from across a defined geography, with patients and the public, to put the needs of patients above those of organisations or professions.

5 Developing the senate council and assembly Applications invited for chair Applications invited for council  over 50 applicants  long list/short list  two days of interviews  good mix of professions and geography Invitations to join Assembly  currently over 120 members

6 Developing the senate council and assembly Early meetings of council focussing on getting the governance and processes right  Development event at SoL  Focus on politic awareness  Case studies  Role play  Team building Assembly event in December  Offer to observe at council meetings

7 Topics covered so far MLU at Bishop Auckland Five high risk acute pathways in North Cumbria Senate chair involvement in SeQIHS Elements of Child Health pathway in North Tyneside and Northumberland Manning of ambulances in Durham Dales

8 The North Cumbria Experience CCG request to review pathways  cardiac, stroke, GI bleeds, emergency care, respiratory Subtle change in focus due to state of readiness Two day visit with briefing from CCG on night before Meetings with clinicians, managers, OSC and lobby groups Travel to both hospital sites

9 The North Cumbria Experience Draft report checked for accuracy Positive feedback, supportive approach appreciated Possible revisit as part of assurance process

10 The Smith Review Review of Improvement Architecture along with Clinical Networks, AHSNs, NHS IQ and Leadership Academy Senates to continue More dialogue needed on detail Strong preference for current local arrangements
