1 4.OA.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

2 Carnival Ride Ticket Price Ferris Wheel $3.00 Tilt-a-Whirl $2.00
Merry – Go - Round $1.00 Fun House Scrambler $4.00 Denise gets an allowance of $10.00 a month. Which rides could she go on if she spent one month’s allowance? Which operations did you use? Answers will vary Example She could through the fun house 5 times. 2 x 5 = $10.00

My dad made 48 cupcakes. He packaged them with 6 cupcakes in each box. How many teachers could he give the boxes of cupcakes to? 8 teachers would get cupcakes

4 Which equations below could you use to solve the cupcake problem?
My dad made 48 cupcakes. He packaged them with 6 cupcakes in each box. How many teachers could he give the boxes of cupcakes to? 48 = 6 x c 48 x 6 = c 6 + c = 48 c x 6 = 48 6 ÷ c = 48 48 ÷ 6 = c c ÷ 6 = 48 A D F

I have 25 chairs to set up for a band performance. I can fit 6 chairs in a row. I think I will be able to make at least 5 rows. Is this correct? Have student explain the correct answer and interpret the remainder.

7 Jig Saw – multi-step problems
1 There are 583 students in Suzy’s school. 99 third grade students left the school on a field trip. There are about 20 students in each class. How many classrooms are being used today? Explain your answer. 2 The school bought apples to give to students. They have 30 boxes with 8 apples in each box and they have 20 boxes with 10 apples in each box. The shelter already has 16 cans of tomato soup. How many cans of tomato soup does the food kitchen have now? The food kitchen uses 20 cans of tomato soup each week. How many weeks will go by before the food kitchen needs more tomato soup? Have students number off from 1 – 4. students get into groups with the same number and solve the problem. Elect one student to be the presenter of the answer. Answer 1 – 583 – 99= 484 divided by 20 = 24 remainder classrooms because you have to have a place for the 4 left over students Answer 2 – 146 students remainder 2 apples Answer 3 – 18 tables of 10 23 tables of 8 Answer 4 – 148 cans of soup 7 weeks worth of soup More resources for 4.OA.3 at
