Uni-T Delusion gives one a false sense of reality.

Thesis The older men in Holden's life represent reality of the invariable loss of innocence, which prompts Holden's irritation towards them as he wants to preserve innocence and is reluctant to mature.

●Holden sees Mr. Spencer as old and disgusting. ●Mr. Spencer lives a "depressing" life. ●Holden regrets coming to see Mr. Spencer the minute he enters his house. “‘Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules’...‘Game my a**’” (8). ●Holden thinks he is catering to society. ●Mr. Spencer represents what Holden doesn't want to grow up to become. Mr. Spencer

●Holden does not respect him ●Haas is judgmental ●Holden believes he is superficial ●He does not look for the best in people ●He is goal driven and has hidden motives “On Sundays, old Haas went around shaking hands. He’d be charming as hell. Except if some boy had little old funny-looking parents. Old Haas would shake hands with them and give them a phony smile then he’d go talk, for maybe half an hour, with someone else's parents. I can’t stand that stuff. It makes me so depressed I go crazy” (17). Mr. Haas

D.B. ● D.B.’s experience in the war makes Holden scared of growing up. “I was practically a child at the time, but I remember when he used to come home on furlough and all, all he did was lie on his bed, practically. He hardly ever even came in the living room,” (140). ● Lives and works in Hollywood; a place which represents to Holden conformity to society. ●Holden is disappointed in the way D.B. grew up. “Now he’s out in Hollywood, D.B., being a prostitute,” (2).

Maurice ● Represents the opposite of innocence. ○sex “‘Innarested in a little tail t’night?’…‘Okay. I’ll send a girl up in about fifteen minutes,’” (102). ● Adults lie and can act like bullies ●Displays a corrupted version of adulthood ●Suggests that people become disgusting when they grow up “Old Maurice unbuttoned his whole uniform coat. All he had on underneath was a phony shirt collar, but no shirt or anything. He had a big fat hairy stomach,” (113).

Mr. Antolini ● Mr. Antolini is the symbol of the reality of adulthood, and what Holden wants to be; but Holden doesn't want to get let go of his innocence. "It may be the kind where, at the age of thirty, you sit in some bar hating everyone who comes in.." (186). ● He gives Holden the best explanation of how to live life. "...but I can very clearly see you dying nobly, one way or another, for some highly unworthy cause." (188). ● Holden likes Mr. Antolini because he is easy to talk to.
