2 ENLIGHTENMENT & SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION The Age of Reason

3 SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION  Renaissance inspired a spirit of curiosity in many fields  Scholars began questioning ideas that existed for hundreds of years  During the Reformation, religious leaders challenged the way they were told to think about God and salvation  Scientific Revolution challenged the way people viewed the universe and their existence in it

4  The Scientific Revolution was anew way of thinking about the natural world  Based on careful observation and a willingness to question accepted beliefs  During the Renaissance, scholars uncovered many classical manuscripts – often ancient authorities didn’t agree with each other  European explorers discovered new people, plants, animals and foods not indigenous to Europe – there were new truths to be found

5 NEW MODELS OF THE UNIVERSE  Nicolas Copenicus – heliocentric (sun- centered) theory  Johannes Kepler – elliptical orbits around the sun, not circles  Galileo Galilei – laws of motion  Francis Bacon – scientific method – a logical procedure for gathering and testing ideas  Rene Descartes – analytical geometry  Isaac Newton – laws of gravity

6 ENLIGHTENMENT  Philosophers admired Newton for using REASON to explain the laws of nature  People began to look for laws governing human behavior  They hoped to apply reason and the scientific method to all aspects of society – government, religion, education and economics  Enlightenment reached its height in mid-1700s

7 Step 1: Get a computer, turn it on and log in. Don’t touch it again after that til told. Step 2: Receive Enlightenment worksheet from Ms. Whitman. Look it over, do you have any questions? Step 3: Receive Enlightenment thinker from Ms. Whitman. “I think, therefore I am.” Step 4: Learn about the Enlightenment thinker online and complete the worksheet. Learn it well, you will have to teach the information to your classmates! Ask if you have questions. Step 5: Get together in small groups of the SAME philosopher to compare and clarify information Step 6: Interview your fellow Enlightenment philosophers. You should be conducting 3 interviews But you can interview multiple of a certain philosopher to better understand their ideas You are the philosopher! Answer like them!
