1 Outcome 3 Self-tanning treatments

2 Learning objectives Identify the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods of applying self-tan State what PSI means in relation to tanning Describe what a tanning corrector is and how it should be used Level 3 Beauty Therapy

3 Manual hand application
Advantages Disadvantages Treatment often begins with a full body exfoliation before the tan is applied Longer treatment time A luxurious treatment; feels more like a body treatment than a tan Greatly labour intensive Suitable for those clients who are contra-indicated to a spray due to respiratory conditions More expensive due to additional products used and more therapist time being required A thorough application can be applied manually by the therapist Some clients may find the treatment invasive Controlled exposure of body parts to be worked on Level 3 Beauty Therapy

4 Spray gun application Advantages Disadvantages
A quick method of application Requires the client to expose much of the body during the whole treatment Can be applied in a salon or at home Labour intensive The PSI (see below) can be controlled by the therapist Quality of result is down to the therapist’s skill and application A thorough application can be applied by the therapist using the spray gun Level 3 Beauty Therapy

5 Spray booth application
Advantages Disadvantages Totally private treatment Not suitable for a client who has respiratory conditions Quickest method of application Not suitable for a client who may be affected by claustrophobia No therapist required High initial investment cost Results may not be as desired if the client has not carried out correct preparation procedures Tan results may be disappointing as it is up to the client to stand correctly while being sprayed The booth cannot be altered to match clients’ differing shapes, sizes and contours Spray tan booth takes up space Level 3 Beauty Therapy

6 PSI PSI stands for pounds per square inch and is the pressure and flow setting of the air produced by the compressor in the spray gun application. PSI controls the width, distance and amount of solution that is released by the spray gun. To get the best result possible adjustment is required to ensure the correct pressure based on the viscosity of the solution of the tanning product. Level 3 Beauty Therapy

7 Tanning correctors A tanning corrector is a product that is often created and supplied by manufacturers to match their tanning solutions. They work by helping to remove tan within areas that are patchy or streaky up to a certain number of hours after the tan has been applied. They work in a similar way to an exfoliant and tan can then be applied over the top of the corrector to even out the area. Level 3 Beauty Therapy
