1 We investigate the role of structural (polymorphous transformation), chemical (solute clusters) and structural/chemical defects (solute rich and lean f.c.c. nanocrystals) at the nm-scale on corrosion. One examples is the study of nanocrystals: Nanocrystals in an amorphous matrix covered by a chemically homogeneous oxide [1] Theoretical effects of isolated nanoscale particles of copper including bonding-coordination effects and quantum size effects [2] Solute lean nanocrystal with a protective compositional field [3] in the remaining amorphous matrix around them [3] CORROSION MECHANISMS IN AMORPHOUS ALLOYS: CRITICAL COMPOSITIONAL AND STRUCTURAL DEFECTS FOR LOCAL CORROSION J CORROSION MECHANISMS IN AMORPHOUS ALLOYS: CRITICAL COMPOSITIONAL AND STRUCTURAL DEFECTS FOR LOCAL CORROSION John R. Scully, University of Virginia, DMR 0504983 (left) STEM-DF image showing a typical microstructure near the oxide/metal interface of amorphous nanocrystalline alloy (Al-Fe-Gd) with f.c.c. nanocrystals formed by primary crystallization. [2] [1] Devitrification Routes in Metallic Glasses = Defects Polymorphous crystallization (1,2, or 3): G → M or  Eutectic crystallization (4 or 5): G → M or  +  Primary crystallization (6) G → G +  (solute lean nanocrystal) Final equilibrium (5’)  +   Amorphous matrix and solute lean f.c.c nanocrystals ___ 20 nm  G= Glass [3] Solute field around a solute lean nanocrystal impedded in an amorphous matrix Isolated fcc particle with 38 atoms
