2 Electric Grid Basics Customers Fort Collins Utilities Platte River
Power Authority Customers Distribution Transmission Generation 115 – 230 kV 13.2 kV

3 Outage Impact & Reliability Needs
1960s: Electric clock would be late 1970s: Electronic clock would blink “12:00” s: Computers would reboot Point out how accustom we are to have power and how much the economy depends on it 2000s: E-Commerce & Stock Markets collapse Northeast blackout of 2003  $6 billon loss

4 Fort Collins Reliability Statistics (1/1/2013 – 12/31/2013)
Number of outages: 91 ASAI: % How reliable the system is Average System Availability Index SAIDI: Goal: or lower (US average: 240) If all customers had been out of power they would have been in an outage for 9.5 minutes System Average Interruption Duration Index CAIDI: Goal: or lower (US average: 160) Customers that experience a power outage were out an average of 32 minutes Customer Average Interruption Duration Index

5 Advanced Meter Fort Collins
$36M total cost Electric: $32M $16M from Department of Energy grant Water: $4M 11-year payback from operational savings (e.g., meter reading) Meter installations started early through Q Supports CO2 reduction goals

7 Early System-Level Results
This heat map shows an aggregation of low voltage alarms from a neighborhood in our Initial Deployment Area

8 From Reactive to Proactive
Zooming in closer revealed the meters that sent the low voltage alarm. Checking in our distribution maps showed a transformer that is likely getting close to its rated capacity. No Customers had to call in!
