1 Physical Education in the Walled Lake Secondary Schools Quality Physical Education at Work!

2 Mission Statement The mission of the Walled Lake School’s Physical Education program, in partnership with our community, is to provide a sequential educational program for students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle.

3 Why P.E.? Only 19% of high School students are physically active for 20 minutes or more five day a week in physical education classes. 22.4% MI adults are considered over weight. 7.6 million MI adults cost 8.9 billion in health insurance premiums, lost productivity, and Medicaid payments.

4 Quality Physical Education; Teaches to and assess the State and District approved Benchmarks & Content Standards. (not available in any other class) Establishes a positive health habit early in life. Lowers anxiety and stress levels. Improves aerobic endurance, muscle strength, and flexibility. Contributes to positive self esteem and self concept.

5 Just a Few of the Concepts Taught and Assessed Total Fitness Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Exercise Muscular Endurance Exercise Safety The Principles of Overload, Progression and Specificity Frequency, Intensity, and Time Formula Personal Fitness Goals

6 Praise for Walled Lake P.E. Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness Level 4 Recognition Need based curriculum through variety of classes offered.

7 P.E. For Everyone Personal Fitness I* Personal Fitness II Team Sports Aerobics Conditioning Swimming Sports Officiating Individual/Lifetime Sports Personal Weights Advanced Weights Life Guard Training * Personal Fitness I is the prerequisite for all other P.E. electives

8 Options offered Personal Fitness I Test out offered to those students who do not feel they have time to take the class during the normal scheduled day. Summer School – Two sessions can be taken to satisfy entire PE requirement. Willingness to explore other options.

9 The State Board of Education Says: “Coordinated School Health Programs can positively impact student academic achievement and empower students with the knowledge, skills, and judgment essential to help them make healthy and responsible choices in life.” “It is the unique role of quality physical education programs to provide opportunities for children to understand the importance of physical activity and acquire skills to combat a sedentary lifestyle.”

10 “….The (State) board further believes that schools must do all they can to promote student health and well being if Michigan’s ambitious academic achievement and the goals of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 are to be realistically attained.”

11 Graduation Requirements Committee As of September 30 th, 2003 the Graduation Requirements Committee stands behind it’s earlier decision to vote down physical education waivers and implement an optional PE test out to satisfy the needs of those who have scheduling conflicts.
