SMILE Project Overview TRACE Project: TRAnsnational Cooperation for the improvement of buildings Energy performance and efficiency Final Conference Piraeus, Greece 25/09/2014 Presented by: Maria Poulou, Municipality of Piraeus

SMILE basic info SMILE is a MED Project funded by ERDF & IPA Acronym: SMart green Innovative urban Logistics for Energy efficient mediterranean cities Key words Energy efficient Innovative Smart Green Start Date: 1/01/2013 End Date: 30/04/2015 SMILE Project 5 MED countries 6 cities 7 Institutes / Foundations IPA funds 212.000€ (85%) Nat. funds 37.500€ (15%) ERDF funds 1.216.899,75€ (75%) Nat. funds 405.633,25€ (25%) Total Budget 1.872.533€ 28 months duration 11 partners

Theme of the Project (1/2) Development & Implementation of innovative strategies, plans and measures on energy efficient mobility solutions for smart MED cities By Utilising: Available technologies Previous experiences On going initiatives Taking into account Technical issues Cost issues other related issues

Theme of the Project (2/2) In this framework the Project will: Define Plan Test Share & Promote Public policies Strategies & Measures for intelligent urban freight solutions

Aim of the Project (1/2) Increase the awareness of the strong impact that urban logistics may have on the energy efficiency of cities Improve the knowledge of successfully proven energy- efficient urban logistics solutions Support public policies, strategies and plans on energy- efficient urban logistics issues Reduce energy consumption related to logistics and transport Reduce transport greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions Minimize congestion and other disruptions caused by the urban freight distribution activity

Aim of the Project (2/2) Work and Cooperate at a transnational level Share Knowledge Exchange Experiences Transfer Good Practices Measure Results

The Consortium (1/2) 4 city authorities: Municipality of Piraeus (Greece) City of Rijeka (Croatia) Mobility Department of Barcelona city Council (Spain) Municipality of Montpellier (France)

The Consortium (2/2) 7 specialised Institutes / Foundations: Regional Energy Agency Kvarner (CROATIA) AFT - Délégation Régionale Languedoc Roussillon (FRANCE) Center for Innovation in Transport (CENIT) / Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) (SPAIN) Foundation of the Valencian Community for Strategical Promotion, Development and Urban Innovation (SPAIN) Institute for Transport and Logistics Foundation (ITALY) The Valenciaport Foundation for Research, Promotion and Commercial Studies of the Valencian region (SPAIN) Centre for Research and Technology Hellas / Hellenic Institute of Transport (GREECE)

7 non partner structures support SMILE Project 1. Municipality of Valencia, Local Authority (Spain) 2. DHL Exel Supply Chain Spain, other (Spain) 3. KLOK Kooperationszentrum Logistik e.V., Regional Development Agency (Germany) 4. IFSTTAR, Technological and scientific research center (France) 5. Emilia-Romagna Region, Regional Authority (Italy) 6. University of Westminster, Institute of applied sciences (UK) 7. AVELE, Technological and scientific research Center (Spain) Partners Non Partner Structures

Geographic Area (1/2) SMILE Project brings together: 3 large sized cities 3 medium sized cities Bologna Valencia Montpellier (around 225.000 inhabitants) Rijeka (around 140.000 inhabitants) Piraeus (around 170.000 inhabitants) (around 1M inhabitants ) Barcelona (the metropolitan area exceeds 4M inhabitants) Of course there are distinct differences between them

Geographic Area (2/2) - The existence of ‘complex’ historic city centers - 4 of the participating cities are actually port-cities (Piraeus, Barcelona, Valencia and Rijeka) But they also share specific common characteristics which will be carefully considered: SMILE cities share common goals and intend to develop cost-effective and energy-efficient urban logistics solutions

Measuring & Modeling Urban Freight distribution (WP3) SMILE will adapt and improve current available Urban Logistics Models in order to model, measure and assess urban freight logistics status, needs and performances in each city. SMILE will use the CITYGOODS Model which is already recalibrated to project needs It was initially developed by Emilia-Romagna Region for Cityports Project – CADSES

Measuring & Modeling Urban Freight distribution (WP3) The Model offers: The quantification of the freight movements disaggregated by supply chain occurring in each traffic zone for the urban delivery of goods in the city areas selected How it works (simplified): Each city has - selected a study area segregated in traffic zones - selected to study a number of supply chains for the delivery of goods - collected data for Origin-Destination trips for each supply chain - gathered additional specific data related to additional parameters

Measuring & Modeling Urban Freight distribution (WP3) Expected Results: Estimated transport flows, energy consumption, carbon footprint, bottlenecks, critical areas, etc. Results will be used as input data for urban traffic micro- simulation for urban management decisions Final goal: To evaluate the effects of each city logistic policy in terms of vehicle congestion and polluting emissions through the assignment of truck flows on the road network. Provide a valuable tool for decision making both at policy and operational level

Focus on Policies, Strategies, Plans and Measures (WP4) Scope: Defining and assessing of transferable policies, strategies, plans & measures regarding innovative and energy efficient solutions in city logistics (highest applicable & broader energy impact) Basic Steps: A through review of the available urban freight city mobility plans and introduction of a new policy framework (addressing strategic and specific needs, objectives, new guidelines, etc.) Having also input from pilots, cities will introduce new urban freight action plans adapted by cities (new policy framework & necessary activities for broad energy effect on the urban environment)

Test of smart city solutions and action plans to implement energy efficient measures (WP5) 9 SMILE pilot activities in 4 main topic: Innovative technologies: Electric mobility (3) Information tools: ICT solutions for city logistics (2) Operational tools: Optimised waste collection & transport operative solutions (2) Marketing tools: Operators “green labelling” schemes (2) through pilot demonstration activities involving public & private actors will test smart urban logistics solutions SMILEcities Pilots results will be evaluated and will provide input on the action plans for full scale implementation of the solutions tested
