2 Today’s Agenda 1.EA #1 Requirements 2.Pursuit of Happiness Written Response and Discussion 3.Activity 4.2 Searching for Meaning Objectives: -Develop a working definition of Transcendentalism and its key tenets. -Explain how the Transcendentalists envisioned the pursuit of happiness.

3 EA #1 Requirements On the notecard provided, write down the four requirements for Embedded Assessment #1. This is a timed activity. You may use your notes. You may not use your neighbor, your neighbor’s notes, nor your electronic device.

4 Unpacked Embedded Assessment 1  In a multi-paragraph essay, describe a personal experience and convey its significance to the reader.  Choose an organization structure that includes a detailed description of the event, a response, and a reflection (relate to pursuit of happiness and/or transcendental ideas).  Effectively employ consistent tone, purposeful diction, and vivid details.  Present a final draft that demonstrates evidence of the writing process.

5 Unit Four: The Pursuit of Happiness o What makes you happy? Really think about this. When are you the happiest? What are you doing? What is going on around you? Be specific. o 5-7 sentences minimum o Share with your table (or not, if it is too personal). o Are you happiest alone? With other people?

7 McCandless’s World View (p. 257)  Read the excerpt from Into the Wild on page 257.  Underline words or phrases that seem to be central to Chris McCandless’s world view.

8 List at least five words/phrases that define McCandless’s pursuit of happiness.

9 Making Inferences – page 264 Fill in the left-hand column of the chart with INFERENCES you can make about “Alexander Supertramp” and his understanding of TRANSCENDENTALISM? Wanna hint? 1. Alex REJECTS. 2. Alex SEEKS.
