5. Independent and dependent clauses
Independent Clauses are like adults-they can go out by themselves any time they like.
Part of a sentence (separated with a comma) that makes a complete sentence on it’s own
Dependent Clauses are like children-they can’t go out anywhere alone, unless and (independent clause) goes with them.
Part of a sentence (separated by a comma) that contains a subject and a predicate, but does not make a complete sentence on it’s own
Example: If I am late for school again, I will have to go to detention.

6. Practice
Directions: Underline the independent clause and circle the dependent clause.
I am not doing the dishes tonight unless someone helps me.
Because he was talking to a girl, Mathew was late for choir.
I ran drills at football practice until I could barely stand anymore.
After the curtains opened, Elsa stood mesmerized in the stage.
You may play outside if a friend if a friend comes over.
When Julie calls you, you need to go back to the store.
