RAISEonline 1

2 We want to develop data literate school leaders* A data-literate leader: Thinks about purpose Recognises the usefulness and limitations of data, and the importance of other kinds of evidence Is (sufficiently) knowledgeable about statistical concepts Uses data to raise questions and hypotheses Shows empathy with different audiences Ensures access to data to others that need it and supports its interpretation * Based on a concept developed by Lorna Earl and Steven Katz in ‘Leading Schools in a Data-Rich World’ p18-20

3 A quiz 1.What does RAISE stand for? 2.How many levels are there in the National Curriculum? 3.What is meant by the term ‘statistical significance’? 4.What is the APS equivalent of a level 3a? 5.What do APS, VA, CVA and pupil progress charts measure? When and how should each be used? 6.What factors are included in CVA? 7.Where do you find your school’s forward estimates? 8.What’s the difference between a prediction, an estimate and a target? 9.How is ‘expected progress’ calculated? 10.What factor(s) influence the size of a school’s confidence intervals?

4 RAISEonline –Reporting and –Analysis for –Improvement through –School –Self Evaluation

5 How well are all your pupils achieving? Some key questions to ask: Which pupils and pupil groups in your school are achieving well? Are all pupils, including disadvantaged groups, fulfilling their potential or should they achieve more? Do pupils, who did well in a prior Key Stage, lose momentum and fail to make progress? Are the most disadvantaged pupils, or those with SEN, making sufficiently rapid progress to catch up with their peers? Are the most able pupils stretched and challenged sufficiently? Are overall results at the end of a Key Stage concealing poor progress?
