Bell Ringer January 12, 2015 School Day 91 Daily Decimal (DD) 1.What is the School Day to the 1 st Semester as a Decimal rounded to the nearest thousandth? 2.Explain what this means: 0 ≤ P(event) ≤ 1 3.Determine if the event is certain, impossible, equally likely, likely, or unlikely. Rolling a number greater than 2 with a number cube. Clear Target – I will be able to perform probability experiments and collect data. Homework: Textbook pg. 646-647 # 6 – 9, 11

Let’s watch this video: Experimental Probability
3
Question… Why do scientists or others conduct experiments? Experimental probability is one way of estimating the probability of an event occurring using observations and taking data.

5
Light Bulb What I know about probability. Experimental Probability can be expressed as a ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials.

Guided Practice Write your answer as a fraction, decimal, and percent. 1.During archery practice, Teri hits the target on 14 out of 20 tries. What is the experimental probability that she will hit the target on her next try?

2.A reporter surveys 75 people to determine whether they plan to vote for or against a proposed amendment. Of these people, 65 plan to vote for the amendment. Write a ratio. a)What is the experimental probability that the next person surveyed would say he or she plans to vote for the amendment? b)What is the experimental probability that the next person surveyed would say he or she plans to vote against the amendment?

3.Jack hit a baseball on 13 out of 30 tries during practice. What is the experimental probability that he will hit the ball on his next try? Write your answer as a fraction, decimal, and percent. 4.Cam hit the bull’s-eye in darts 8 times out of 15 throws. What is the experimental probability that Cam’s next throw will hit the bull’s eye?

5.For the past two weeks, Benita has been recording the number of people at Eastside Park at lunchtime. During that time, there was 50 or more people at the park 9 out of 14 days. a)What is the experimental probability that there will be 50 or more people at the park during lunchtime on the 15 th day? b)What is the experimental probability that there will not be 50 or more people at the park during lunchtime on the 15 th day?

6.The stem-and-leaf plot shows the depth of snow in inches recorded in Buffalo, NY, over a 10-day period. a)What is the experimental probability that the snow will be less than 6 inches? b)What is the experimental probability that the snow will be more than 10 inches deep on the 11 th day?

Exit Slip 1.Survey results show that cheese is the favorite pizza topping for 18 out of 24 people. What percent is closest to the experimental probability that a person’s favorite pizza topping will NOT be cheese?
