3 Compliance Training Def: Failure to comply with instruction. Failure to follow directions from others as a general standard of conduct. Can range from passive inaction to outward defiance. Non-compliance is a learned behavior

4 Non-compliance Is Learned and Maintained as a result of: –Inadequate reinforcement for compliance –Non-compliance is reinforced –Student does not understand multiple request –Lack of visual supports for instructions –Repetition of instruction is not followed through –Little opportunity to reinforce for appropriate behavior –Instruction in not Clear and Concise How many ways to stand up?

5 Case Study Jamin is in class working on his math. He quickly becomes agitated and runs to the back of the classroom and lays on the floor screaming. Teacher approaches Jamin and states: Low Probability Demands: –“Get back to work” –“Go back to your seat” –“Go to the office” High Probability Demands: –“Clap your hands” –“Touch your nose” –“Make a basket”

6 Building Behavioral Momentum Select tasks with a high probability outcome Reinforce heavily Utilize during low-level non-compliance Maintain consistency Consider topic of special interest –Write down the states and capitals

8 Compliance Training Compliance Form Forced Choices –With a preferred choice Minimize demands –Reduce the task in order to reinforce Provide high probability demands Heavily reinforce Task Analysis for NVI or Receptive Instructions –Sit down –Hands quiet –Do This (NVI)

9 Steps for Compliance Training Teach Compliance –This weeks videos on compliance training Obtain St. attention- remove distractions State request clearly and match St. cognitive ability State in positive outcome form Immediately reinforce Utilize shaping procedures –Close approximation to the desired behavior

10 Compliance Training Make requests in the “do” format Task analyze the request Develop consistency across environments Build behavioral momentum –Provide 3-5 high probability requests before the low probability demand is made –Provide immediate reinforcement –Only allow breaks after completion of demand
