2 Add a word problem example to the powerpoint, finish notes handout for students.
Fix powerpoint, add answers to the problem on factor label worksheet 1 that come up automatically step by step in powerpoint. Would be useful in quickly reviewing worksheet. Add arrows to teaching kids how to do this!

3 Team Conversions You walk 350 yards to class. How many inches is this?
You wait 3 weeks for the new Glamour magazine to come in the mail. How many hours is this? You wait 42 minutes for class to end. How many years is this? You’re on a plane traveling at 450 mph. How many feet per second are you traveling? Try number 1 on page 4 of your packet.

4 Today you are going to… turn in s So you can… better You’ll know you’ve got it when you can answer the

8 Bell Work 10/6/14 – 4 minutes Take out your conversion sheet. (kevin hates dating) You’re paying for gas. What does $3.50/gal mean? Does it change depending on how much gas you buy? W3SAYWoS

9 Schedule Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Turn in Density Lab!
Factor Label Method HW: Factor Label Problems Tuesday Wednesday Review Factor Label Method Thursday Review for test Friday Test on Metrics, Measurement, Sig Figs, and Density

10 Objectives! Learn the factor label method!
Why does it work (2 reasons).* Be able to use it to convert units on top. Be able to use it to convert units on bottom. Be able to use it to convert units on top and bottom.

11 Factor Label Method What is it?
It’s a very useful method of solving problems and converting units. Units are extremely important in this method.

12 Why does the Factor Label Method work?
2 principals Anything divided by itself is 1 Anything multiplied by one is the same value

13 1. Anything divided by itself is 1
In the situation below, x = 5 and y = 5 x = Why? y Can we then say that x = y because they’re the same thing? (5) 1 foot 12 inches 1 foot = 12 inches because they’re the same thing! It’s just a different way of saying the exact same length.

14 1. Anything divided by itself is 1
So, if 1 foot = 12 inches and anything divided by itself is 1, than 1 foot = 12 inches

15 2. If you multiply something by 1, the answer is the same
(8) (1) = 10 (8/8) = X (5/5) = 10 (x/x) =

16 We’ve also established that 1 foot = 12 inches. Therefore…
In the situation below, x = 5 and y = 5. We therefore said: x = 8 y We’ve also established that 1 foot = 12 inches. Therefore…

17 2. If you multiply something by 1, the answer is the same
In the situation below, 1 foot = 12 inches. We therefore said: 1 foot = 12 inches Therefore

18 The key here is UNITS! Let’s try this with 2 ft. (next slide)

19 2.00 ft = ? in 2.00 ft 1 12 in 1 ft 24.0 in X = 24.0 in 12 in is EXACTLY 1 foot, so infinite number of sig figs on those 2 numbers

20 Tips for Basic Factor Label
Write the given over 1. Write “x ” Write the old units on the opposite side (top or bottom) so they cancel. Write the new units on the other side. Cross out the old units. When you’ve reached the units you want, multiply the top, then divide the bottom.

21 1 ft = 12 in 1 yd = 3 ft 1 mi = 5,280 ft 3 ft = ? in 8 in = ? ft 5.5 yds = ? in 2 mi = ? ft 45,000 in/s = ? mi/s

22 Bell Work 10/7/14 – 5 minutes Take your hw out and place it upside-down on your desk. The moon is 250,000 miles away. How many feet is it from Earth? It takes 272,940 s for a manned mission to get to the moon. How many days did it take?? (figure out how many days, hours, and minutes if you can.)

23 Steps to Factor Label Method Word Problems
Write given information AND what you’re looking for Look at/find conversion factors Make plan Setup problem, making sure to cross out units Solve problem (can multiply and divide in any order) Round your answer Double check your answer and setup

29 Today you are going to… review hw take notes on bottom & both factor label make a conversion! work on some problems So you can… convert units and do stoichiometry in chem class You’ll know you’ve got it when you can answer the questions on the homework

30 Today you are going to… take the quiz make a couple conversions (use arrow method) do practice story problems see a cool fruit video? whacky Wednesday video? So you can… convert units and do stoichiometry in chem class You’ll know you’ve got it when you can answer the questions on the homework

31 Conversions! _____ yd = 1 m (0.9144 = 1 yd)
Look at your conversion sheet. _____ yd = 1 m ( = 1 yd) 1 mi = _____ km (1 km = mi) 1 gallon = _____ mL

33 Bell Work 10/18/13 Put your homework upside-down on the top of your desk. According to recent accurate measurements, the top speed of a Cheetah running in grass is 26.4 m/s. How many miles per hour is this? Still owe me labs! Progress reports!

34 Bell Work 10/21/13 Put your homework upside-down on the top of your desk. The average American drives 36 miles each day. At that rate, how far would someone drive in 55 years? Still owe me labs! Progress reports!

68 Bell Work 10/5 Sam measures the mass of a metal ball on a balance and it reads g. She drops the metal ball into a graduated cylinder and the water level goes from 25.5 mL to 28.8 mL. What would the volume of a of 5.5 kg ball of the same metal be? Convert 1.20 tons to kilograms using the factor label method. Show all of your work, and state your answer with the correct number of significant digits. What is a difference between the measurements “pounds” and “kilograms” that people often forget about? Light speed is 300,000,000 m/s. What is this in mi/hr? Jared’s pencil has a density of 0.75 g/cm3 and a mass of 5.5 g. What is it’s volume? 450,000,000 s = ? years 550 mi/hr = ? ft/s The moon is 250,000 miles away. How many feet is it from Earth? It takes 272,940 seconds for a manned mission to get to the moon (which is 250,000 miles away). How many days was this? A car consumes gallons of fuel when driving a distance of 4.00 km. How many gallons will it consume when driving miles? Convert this to days, hours, minutes! 3 days, 3 hours, 49 minutes

You want to make 300. mL of 3 molar NaOH solution. (Three molar means there are 3 moles of solute in 1 liter.) If there are g of NaOH in one mole, how many grams of NaOH do you need?

70 Proof of the Factor Label Method’s Flexibility
Lead has a density of g/ cm3. What would the volume of 4.0 grams of lead be? Gold has a density of g/ cm3. How much mass would 8.50 cm3 of lead have? A car is driving at 45.0 mi/hr. How many hours will it take to drive 105 mi?
