3 University of Bradford www.bradford.ac.uk Fees and Bursaries for September 2006 Tuition Fees (1) What can a University charge? –From September 2006, universities in England will be able to vary the fees they charge new undergraduate Home and EU students between £0 and £3000 –Fees will not rise by more than the rate of inflation before 2010 –Variable fees will only affect students who start their course in September 2006 or later –Universities can only charge greater than the ‘standard fee’ of ~£1200 if they have agreed an Access Agreement with OFFA

4 University of Bradford www.bradford.ac.uk Fees and Bursaries for September 2006 Tuition Fees (2) Tuition Fee Loan –Students will no longer be required to pay their tuition fees before or during their studies i.e. HE is free at the point of entry –Tuition fee loans will be available up to the amount the institution will charge a student during a particular academic year –Returning students will also eligible to borrow £1,200 from September 2006 as a fee-loan as well as a student loan –Fee loans are paid direct to the University and are not means tested. They are available to Home and EU students.

5 University of Bradford www.bradford.ac.uk Fees and Bursaries for September 2006 Tuition Fees (3) Repayment of Fee Loan –Students will start repaying their loan in the April after leaving HE and when they are in employment and earning over £15,000 –Repayments are linked to the amount a student earns, and not how much they owe –Students will pay 9% of the difference between their salary and £15,000 in one year e.g. a student earning £18,000 will pay £5.19 per week –Any outstanding balances (except arrears) will be written off after 25 years.

7 University of Bradford www.bradford.ac.uk Fees and Bursaries for September 2006 Support – Grants, Loans and Bursaries (1)  Grants -Students from lower income households will be eligible for a non-repayable maintenance grant of up to £2,700 -Students from a household with a residual income less than £17,500 will receive the full grant -Students from a household with a residual income between £17,500 and £37,425 will receive a partial grant -These are available to Home students (not EU) and will be re-assessed every year.

8 University of Bradford www.bradford.ac.uk Fees and Bursaries for September 2006  Loans -Student loans to help with living costs continue to be available for Home students. -The maximum loans available per year are £4,405 for a student living away from home and £3,415 for a student living at home -All students are entitled to 75% of the maximum loan – the remaining 25% is means tested -Students on the maximum levels of Maintenance Grant will have their loan capped by £1200 -These loans will be amalgamated with the fee loans and paid off in the same way when the student is in employment Support – Grants, Loans and Bursaries (2)

9 University of Bradford www.bradford.ac.uk Fees and Bursaries for September 2006  Bursaries -Students on the maximum Maintenance Grant and who are on a course charging the full £3,000 will also be eligible for a least £300 in financial support from their University -Universities can decide the level of bursary that is made available to students Support – Grants, Loans and Bursaries (2)

10 University of Bradford www.bradford.ac.uk Fees and Bursaries for September 2006 Support – Bursaries and Scholarships (Bradford)  The University of Bradford Bursary Scheme -All Home and EU students are eligible for the Bradford University Bursary if they meet the income criteria for any level of maintenance grant i.e. residual income under £37,425 -We anticipate that around 70% of our students will meet this income criteria and be eligible for a bursary -“Bursary” therefore refers to non-repayable support that is linked to income -The Student Loans Company will means test EU students -Students will receive £500 in Year 0, £500 in Year 1, £700 in Year 2 and £900 in Year 3 – for longer courses and Foundation Degrees see the Bursary Matrix

11 University of Bradford www.bradford.ac.uk Fees and Bursaries for September 2006 Support – Bursaries and Scholarships (Bradford) continued  The bursary is loaded in this way as students tell us that they need more money towards the end of their course and student loans are reduced in the final year of study  Bursaries will be paid to students at the end of Feb / beginning of March if they are in good academic standing at the end of semester 1  There will be no bursaries for students on Sandwich courses in the year that they pay lower fees  Students who do not pay their own fees i.e. those on NHS funded courses will not be eligible for the bursaries.

12 University of Bradford www.bradford.ac.uk Fees and Bursaries for September 2006 Support – Bursaries and Scholarships (Bradford) continued  The Compact Award -The University is also offering the Compact Award – a one-off payment of £300 to students who have registered with and actively participated in the University’s Compact Scheme. This is not linked to income and students on NHS funded courses will be eligible. -Students will need to attend one event at the University e.g. a masterclass or lecture -The award will be paid in Year 1 of the student’s course

14 University of Bradford www.bradford.ac.uk Fees and Bursaries for September 2006 Support – Bursaries and Scholarships (Bradford)  Scholarships -Scholarships are non-repayable funding for students linked to certain criteria e.g. academic achievement, residence, subject area -Several schools already offer scholarships to undergraduate students -These can be funded through endowments and donations to the university or through sponsorship -The University will be looking to increase the number of externally funded scholarships available and improve links with businesses – both locally and nationally
