University Research Skills for Women’s Studies WST 495 Spring 2007

Susan Luévano Anthropology, Ethnic & Women’s Studies Librarian Research Consultations – Office: Lib. 417 West – sluevano@csulb.edu sluevano@csulb.edu – Office Hours: Tuesdays, 2:00 - 5:00 – Call for an appointment: (562) 985-5891

Objective To present advanced research strategies and resources appropriate for the discipline of Women’s studies.

Research Process PHASE 1 –State the issue –Define the question –Breakdown topic by concept –Develop a Boolean search strategy PHASE 2 –Select resources & conduct research in: Reference Sources Articles Books Internet

PHASE 3 –Mark, download, e-mail or print search result – Locate materials – Identify availability of resources using COAST – Interlibrary loan needed sources from other libraries PHASE 4 – Repeat and refine research Identify controlled vocabulary Not always a linear process! – Write up findings/conclusions – Create bibliography/references Research Process

Create a research question –Repeat and revise searches Ask why? Content specialist: Professor Philipose

Research Process 1 2 3 immigrants underground economy women domestics undocumented residents informal economy female domestics illegal aliens informal sector out of status unauthorized workers Identify Key Concepts This research aims to explore the interplay of immigration status, gender & "race" in the construction of work relations in the underground economy domestic service sector.

Venn Diagram Immigrant workers Underground Economy Domestics This research aims to explore the interplay of immigration status, gender & "race" in the construction of work relations in the underground economy domestic service sector.

Boolean Operators AND narrows a search –both variables must appear in same citation –terms are different in meaning –example: “Juarez AND Murders AND Women” OR broadens a search –terms are similar in meaning –either term may appear in the record –example: “Latinos OR Hispanics” –example: “undocumented OR immigrants” NOT eliminates unwanted variables –Narrow search –Example: Mexico NOT “New Mexico”

Truncation Allows for searching root word with variant endings Example: –Lesbian* Lesbians Lesbianism * = Most common computer command + or ?

Adjacency Quotation marks tells computer to search phrases in exact order –Example: “National Organization of Women ” “women of color”

Proximity Use "near" to specify words close to each other, in any order. –Example: Immigrant* near underground economy Use "within #" to specify terms which occur within # words of each other in the record. –Example: Racism within 5 gender –Example: Racism w/5 gender

Field Searching Specify fields to search, using field abbreviation. Fields available for most database are au: (author), ti: (title) and su: (subject) –Example: au:Chang AND su:Women Domestics –ti: Disposable domestics immigrant women workers in the global economy AND au:Chang –su:Women alien labor United States

Research Process Create a research strategy – Start broad and then narrow – Use Boolean connectors & truncation, adjacency and fields “women domestic*” AND immigrant* OR alien “women domestic*” AND (illegal* OR illegal*) AND underground economy su:migrants AND su:informal sector
