5. Which data? u Various statistics, data and maps products u Variety of products = variety of citations u For each categories and sub-categories, we need a different model/format of citation: 1 Statistics (aggregate tables) 2 Data (microdata files) 3 Maps (GIS map)

Citation and metadata u Bibliographical reference is often the forgotten element of metadata u Complete citation should be a component of any metadata system u DDI has tags for bibliographical citations u Recommended elements for citing should be part of the DDI u Citation should be consider as a value added information to the DDI

ISI 690 and ISO 690-2 u ISO 690: 1987 Bibliographic references - Content, form and structure u ISO 690-2: 1997 Bibliographic references - Part 2: Electronic documents u ISO Project 690: a revision to amalgate and update the two existing standards u Examples of statistics and data citations have been proposed by Canada u Poor feedback. No data oriented members on the group u A standard should emerge from the (our) data community

IASSIST role u IASSIST has a leading role to play for developing guidelines/standards to properly cite statistics, data and maps u IASSIST is the place to develop a common citation language u DDCIG: need of a working group to work more specifically on this issue ? u Among the potential actions : → Define the characteristics of accepted and common guidelines/standards →Develop a web tool →Promote the guidelines →Be present in the DDI group →Follow the ISO revision →Use the STC Citation Guide as starting points u Partners needed to move in this direction
