Hybrid Fuel Cell Vehicles Followup Bob Thomas, Stephen Ha, Walter Kondratko IIT RET team This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under grant No. EEC-0502174. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.

Overview 10 th – 12 th grade Students were engaged and excited. Students were helping each other through cooperative learning. Students’ presentations.

Pretest Pre-test covered content –How do vehicles generate electricity? –How does vehicle shape affect aerodynamic drag? Students got most of the concept correct or they made pretty good guesses. Students have some idea of what a hybrid car is.

Posttest Posttest covered content - Electrical output can best be supplied by ____ - Factors influencing aerodynamic drag are _____ Due to the time constraint, a couple of the concepts being asked in the posttest were not able to be discussed or covered. The force diagram needed to be revised in order for the students to better understand different types of force acting upon a car.

Inquiry Student will use prior knowledge to respond to questions being asked by the instructor. During some activities, students will use the internet to help accomplish the goal for each of the activities. Open-ended activities.

Ethics Individual accountability. Respect each other as a unique individual. Joy of success is priceless.

Engineering Design Design a Wind Tunnel to test aerodynamic drag. Design an efficient hybrid car within a budget and weight requirement, or modify the design if necessary.

Recommendations Adequate materials for the Wind Tunnel activity. - Find a better way to align the fan with the wind tunnel during the test. - Increase the distance of path for the test. - Implement better design to simulate a ram for the wind tunnel. Modified force diagram is shown on the following page.

Recommendation (continue)
