9 The strategies for internationalization (I)  Internationalization : bidirectional -Encourage NCKU faculty and students to visit and study abroad -Encourage foreign scholars and students to study at NCKU “Brain drain” “Brain circulation” “Brain stagnation”

10 The strategies for internationalization (II)  Financial incentives (Scholarship, Travel support, living quarter assistance)  Campus advertisement and active recruitment  Establish sister universities to exchange faculty and students  Dual degree programs (CWRU, Southern Illinois U Carbondale, Temple, Texas Tech)  Create internationally friendly environment  Student-run group discussions to promote local- international student understanding

11 The status of international students at NCKU  504 international students from 50 countries. (The top 3 countries are Indonesia, Vietnam and Canada)  120 international scholars (postdoctoral fellows, faculty)  Goal: 850 students by 2010  580 courses taught in English

12 Issues in Internationalization at NCKU  Communication between international students and home students  Internationalized social environment (spoken English, infrastructure, etc.)  Curriculum on internationalization issues to benefit home students

13 Challenges to Internationalization  The motivation of local students to study abroad is low  Lacking an internationally friendly environment  Subpar English language skills  University name recognition low  Difficult to establish long-term education or research collaboration
