GSEP 3 rd Annual Project Meeting Zhihong Lin & US DOE SciDAC GSEP Team 8/9-8/10, 2010, GA

SciDAC GSEP 3 rd Annual Project Meeting ► GSEP Goal: predictive capability for confinement of energetic particles in ITER via fully self-consistent simulations of energetic particle turbulence and transport ► Plan: develop gyrokinetic simulation codes based on complementary PIC GTC & continuum GYRO for simulation of energetic particle turbulence; further develop hybrid-MHD codes TAEFL & HMGC for physics studies and benchmarking ► After 2.5 years of GSEP project: where are we in reaching the goal? ► What has GSEP done in the past year? ► What is GSEP priority for the next year?

GSEP Shepherd Paradigm Shift in EP Studies ► Is gyrokinetic turbulence simulation feasible for simulating magnetohydrodynamic Alfvén modes driven by energetic particles? ► GSEP has envisioned and established gyrokinetic turbulence simulation as a necessary paradigm shift in energetic particle studies ► Verification of GTC and GYRO simulations of various AEs/EPM excited by energetic particles and by external antenna ► Toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) & energetic particle mode (EPM) [Nishimura, PoP2009; Bass & Waltz, submitted to PoP, 2010; W. Zhang et al, in preparation] ► Reverse shear Alfvén eigenmode (RSAE) [Deng et al, submitted to PoP, 2010] ► Beta-induced Alfvén eigenmode (BAE) [H. Zhang, in preparation]

Highlights of Recent Validation & Physics Progress ► TAEFL simulation of DIII-D shot #122117 finds twisted (i.e., up-down asymmetric) mode structures as observed in experiments [submitted to PRL, 2010] ► HMGC simulation of DIII-D shots # 122117 & 132707 finds frequency spectra of Alfvénic instabilities close to experimental observations both in absolute frequency and in radial localization, and relaxed EP radial profiles at saturation level close to experimental measurements [Vlad et al, NF2009] ► Nonlinear GYRO simulations of the interaction between meso-scale TAE/EPM instability and micro-scale ITG/TEM turbulence-driven zonal flows [Bass and Waltz, submitted to PoP, 2010] ► Nonlinear GTC simulations of energetic particle transport by microturbulence explain many features of the fast-ion transport in beam-heated DIII-D plasmas [Zhang et al, PoP2010; Heidbrink et al, PRL2009] ► Gyrokinetic theory of BAE has been developed and compared to XHMGC simulation, which has been upgraded to treat thermal ion compressibility [X. Wang et al, submitted to PPCF, 2010]

Major Invited GSEP Talks Since 9/2009 ► 51 st Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society, Division of Plasma Physics, November 2009, Atlanta ► Invited, E. M.
