3. What do these items have in common?
Knockoff Gucci purse,
Counterfeit car parts
Bootleg version of a movie or CD
Version of Microsoft Word copied illegally
They’re all ILLEGAL!

4. Why are they illegal?
Original products can be very expensive compared to the counterfeit (Gucci purse, for example)
Loss tax revenue for government
Loss income for companies (music artists, producers, etc)

5. How many of you have (or know someone who has) ever bought a knock-off (purse, clothes, etc.)?
Or downloaded music illegally?
What about videos?

6. How many of you know somewhere around Jackson where you can buy pirated/counterfeit goods?

7. Piracy is a serious issue!
If you are caught, you could serve from six months to 10 years in PRISON!
Not only will you get jail time, you are responsible for repaying the artist all the money you cheated them out of.
For example, let’s say you sold many, many copies of bootleg CDs or DVDs.
After an investigation, the police decide that you have cheated the artist out of $80,000
You have to begin paying that money back to its rightful owner– the artist!

8. What does the term intellectual property mean?
an original idea/product/etc whose right to use or benefit from is protected by law
What is considered “intellectual property?” (What kind of stuff can be copyrighted?)
This can be music, dance, logo, movie, books, software, artwork, etc

11. Current Event Assignment
Use the Internet to find a current article related to copyright infringement or piracy from a newspaper, magazine, or reliable Website.
Read the article and summarize it in your own words (1st paragraph).
Your 2nd paragraph should explain what you learned from reading the article and how this knowledge will impact your feelings and future actions regarding piracy and/or copyright infringement.

12. Make sure to save in UNIT 1!
Use the following format before printing your article review:
In the upper-right corner of the header, include your name, the Website address where you found your information, and the date of the article.
Title of the article should be centered at the top of the page as a heading in quotation marks.
Proofread your paragraphs for spelling and grammar mistakes, print and turn in.
