Life after New 7.12: Documenting Faculty Choice Arlene Carney, Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs

P & T Terms Regents Policy on Faculty Tenure – called the Tenure Code as a short hand Section numbers refer to sections of this policy. Section 7.11 – the University-wide General Criteria for Tenure Section 7.12 – the unit criteria for tenure in a department, division, or college Section 9.2 – the University-wide Criteria for promotion to professor – Did not exist before the 2007 Faculty Tenure policy

Changes in Promotion and Tenure Faculty Tenure policy was revised in 2007. Previous version was dated 2001. A new Procedures for Reviewing Candidates for Tenure and/or Promotion: Tenure-Track or Tenured Faculty was implemented in 2007.

Changes in Promotion and Tenure The Provost called for revisions of each unit’s 7.12 Statement because both the Faculty Tenure policy and the Procedures document had been revised substantially.

Interpretation 6 of Faculty Tenure If a 7.12 Statement is changed, faculty (assistant and associate professors) may choose either the old or the new 7.12 statement. They must make the choice within one year of administrative approval by the Provost. The new Procedures for Reviewing Candidates for Tenure and/or Promotion: Tenure-Track or Tenured Faculty (2007) requires the Provost to obtain a written agreement from faculty documenting their choice.

Interpretation 6 of Faculty Tenure If faculty do not make a choice between the old and new 7.12 statements within one year of administrative approval of the new 7.12 statement, then the default is the new 7.12 statement.

Memoranda of Understanding The documents are to be generated by the Provost’s office, not by the candidate’s department or college. These documents are to be signed by the candidate, the unit head, the dean or chancellor, and the provost.

Memoranda of Understanding Complicated by the date of hire of the faculty member or the date of his or her promotion to the rank of associate professor. We must get agreements for every assistant and associate professor, both tenure-track and tenured. Choice of 7.12 statement will also affect which 7.12 is used for annual review of probationary faculty.

Presentation Overview The date “June 8, 2007” refers to the date when the new Faculty Tenure policy was accepted by the Board of Regents. The next slides show whether an MOU is required and what should be in the MOU for both untenured faculty and for tenured associate professors.
