1. James Marshall and John Sutter wanted to keep the gold that they found a secret, but the next morning they found an American Indian holding the gold and shouting “Oro” (Gold). Very quickly almost everyone in the nation found out about the gold and wanted some of their own.

2. In 1849 about 100,000 gold seekers(also known as forty-niners) came to California hoping to strike it rich. Out of all those people 80% were from America, while the other 20% were from all over the world.

-one Iowa woman said “at the time the ‘gold fever’ was very contagious” -few miners had any experience -while some found gold easily others found it to be difficult and time- consuming work

3. Mining methods varied by the time of year and climate, but the most popular was placer mining done along streams and rivers. they just basically washed the gold out of loose rock and gravel. Getting gold from hard rock was very difficult and expensive. to reach the gold buried in hills miners had to dig tunnels and shafts. This type of mining was often done by mining companies.

4. Some people found that you can make more money by serving the miners in the camps. because of the grow in population people were willing to pay anything for basic necessities. for example if in the east a loaf of bread was 5 cents. you could sell it for 50 to 75 cents in California.

5. Most mining camps had little authority because they always appeared and disappeared so quickly. Theft and miscommunication was common.
