2 December 10-12, 2008/ARR 1 IHHFC Workshop Proposed Publication Outline roughly following agenda 1. Introduction 2. Near term HHFC design and R&D (ITER) (R. Nygren) 3. Long term HHFC concepts (Power plants) (R. Raffray) 4. Material aspects for near term and long term concepts 3.1development/fabrication/joining (D. Hoelzer) 3.2plasma interaction testing aspects) (M. Roedig) 5. Physics considerations for near term and long term concepts (D. Whyte) 6. Evaluation methodology to evaluate current readiness level vis- à -vis the long term objective and how to get there (M. Tillack) 7. Discussion - issues - recommendations (R. Raffray/R. Nygren/D. Whyte/all) 8. Conclusions (All) Session coordinators -Summarize presentations in your session + points raised in discussion -Send me contributions by January 31, 2009 Presenters -Please send a summary of your presentation with some key figures to your session organizer (cc to me) All other contributions welcome

3 December 10-12, 2008/ARR 2 IHHFC Workshop -Session 2 Long term HHFC concepts (power plants) 3 presentations -EU PFC/divertor concepts for power plants -P.Norajitra -US PFC/divertor concepts for power plants - R. Raffray -Japan PFC/divertor concepts for power plants - S. Konishi/Y. Ueda EU/US Designs presented -He-cooled, W-alloy concepts to accommodate ~10 MW/m 2 -He coolant: ~10MPa; ~600-700°C -W-alloy ~700-1300°C -W armor ~1500-1800°C -Also advanced design with Pb-17Li + SiC f /SiC but limited high heat flux accommodation Different concerns -W armor: off-normal events; erosion; T retention -Structural material: allowable window of operation

4 December 10-12, 2008/ARR 3 IHHFC Workshop -Session 2 Long term HHFC concepts (power plants) For all designs, W alloy development required to widen operating temp. range and to develop reliable fabrication and joining processes. - ~700°C (governed by W ductility considerations) to enable coupling to an ODS ferritic steel manifold -~1300°C (governed by the W recrystallization limit) to provide desirable high-temperature capability) Need ODS FS with high enough temperature for joining with W - ~ 800°C Off normal events - thermal effects on PFC -a few disruptions a year (~ 3-10MJ/m 2, 1-3 ms) -No VDE (~60 MJ/m 2, 0.2 s) -A few uncontrolled ELMs (~1.5 MJ/m 2 over 0.4 ms) -Controlled ELM’s perhaps acceptable with W (~0.3 MJ/m 2 over 0.4 ms)
