3 You may not always have an opportunity to do a detailed physical examination.

4 Examination Procedure

5 The detailed physical exam evaluates the DCAP-BTLS more precisely.

6 Palpate the head beginning with the superior surface.

7 Palpate the frontal area of the face.

8 Inspect the ears and look for blood or fluid.

9 Assess the eyes for pupillary response and any discoloration.

10 Inspect the mouth for injury or foreign bodies.

11 Palpate the neck while an assistant maintains stabilization.

12 Examine the chest and look for paradoxical movement or deformity.

13 Auscultate breath sounds bilaterally.

14 Bilateral: Refers to both the right and left sides of the body. Normal breath sounds are clear and equal bilaterally.

15 Palpate the four quadrants of the abdomen.

16 Palpate the pelvis.

17 Palpate the lower extremities & assess pulse, motor function & sensation.

18 Palpate the upper extremities & assess pulse, motor function & sensation.

19 Ideally, a detailed exam should be performed while en route to the facility.
