Using Timelines as History Students Alternative Perspectives in U.S. History Community High School

Let’s Take a Look at a Timeline September 11 th, 2001 War in Afghanistan October 7, 2001 War in Iraq March 20, 2003

What are some of the major features of a timeline?

Why don’t timelines look like this? 1274- Thomas Aquinas is born in Italy 1969- New York Jets win Super Bowl III 2003- Jennifer Granholm becomes Michigan’s first female governor

What can a timeline do?  A timeline is a tool of selection and emphasis.  Organize events in a chronological order.  Make connections between related events, and filter out unrelated events.  Show cause and effect relationships.  Identify important sections of history, like the years 1939-1945.

How do we use a timeline?  We look for what it selects and what it emphasizes.  We create them to show the relationships between events we think our important. September 11 th, 2001 War in Afghanistan October 7, 2001 War in Iraq March 20, 2003

Let’s practice making our own timelines.  Using what you already know about the events, make a timeline of the Great Depression.  Your timeline should show the events that caused the economy to collapse and the effects this collapse had on Americans.  The events should be as close to the correct chronological order as you can make them.

Start with something like this Causes Effects U.S. Economy Collapses

Keep in mind: Professional historians, to this day, cannot agree on the exact causes of the Depression. Professional historians, to this day, cannot agree on the exact causes of the Depression. No theory is wrong so long as it is based on the facts you know. What’s most important is that your timeline clearly reflects your thoughts about the great depression

If you need any help ask Joel or Marion You’ll have about 10 minutes to make your timeline. If you want to compare your work with another student’s once you’ve finished you may.

What events did you include? What order did you put them in?

As we watch the video today, keep track of what events the video mentions. Compare that to what you included on your timelines.

Why doesn’t this timeline work? What does it not do that a timeline should do? 1274- Thomas Aquinas is born in Italy 1969- New York Jets win Super Bowl III 2003- Jennifer Granholm becomes Michigan’s first female governor REDUNDANT
