7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Critical Design Review Team Unum University of Notre Dame AME 470 Ltd.

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Team Unum Structure Team Leader: Frankie Bott Chief Engineer: Jose Viso CAD Engineer: Jim Hyde Fabrication Engineer: Tim Culbertson Controls/Electronics: Chris Tilton

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Solving the Problem of Accurate Inflation: The objective of the Aura Valve is to aid in accurate inflation of athletic balls and bike/automobile tires. By applying control technology to this task, the Aura Valve eliminates the guess-work involved in the inflation process. The Aura Valve can be used with existing inflatables and air sources, which makes it a truly user-friendly and universal tool.

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Overview of the Aura Valve Electrical Subassembly –Sensing and Control of Airflow Mechanical Subassembly –Physical movement of air from source to inflatable User Interface –Customizable to the needs of the user, as well as displaying the status of the inflation process

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Design Requirements Pressure Range –Input: 0-80 psi –Output: 0-65 psi Standard ¼” internal connections Standard external connections to inflatable and air supply Weight: less than 3 pounds Volume: 7” X 4.5” X 5” User interface

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Solenoid Valve ASCO Valve Model P/N 8320G184 12 Volts DC 400 mA current 0-115 psi Relay Diode Ground V cc (5 V) I/O Pin MiniMAX Transistor Solenoid Power

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Pressure Sensing Motorola MPX5700GP-ND Req’d Voltage: 5 V Accuracy: 0.5% Pressure Range: 0-101.5 psi Weight: <7 Oz. V cc (5 V) I/O Pin MiniMAX Ground Transducer Connection to system

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Mechanical Subassembly

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum User Interface

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Control Logic {MiniMAX is connected to power} If ENTER button is pressed –Prompt user for desired pressure –Begin reading pressure data from transducer –Display target pressure and current pressure {User enters pressure value with pushbuttons} If current pressure < target pressure –Activate relay {Relay turns on solenoid and the vessel begins inflating} If current pressure = target pressure or KILL button is pressed –Turn off relay {Relay turns off solenoid, vessel stops inflating} If ANY button is pressed –Restart the program from the beginning MiniMax

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Housing

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Cost of Prototype Development Most Expensive Component: Solenoid Valve ($89) Housing Fabrication: $70 Electronic Components: $56 Hosing and Fittings: $25

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Working Prototype Inflatable connected to Aura Valve through the Smarthead LCD displays instructions and status for user interface Air Source is connected to the Aura Valve Buttons allow user to operate the Aura Valve

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum Prototype Strengths and Weaknesses Strengths: –User friendly –Consistent performance –Functionality –Proof of Concept –Compatibility/ Universality Weaknesses: – –Cost – –Size – –Portability – –Weight – –Robustness

7 December 2004AME 470 – Team Unum From Prototype to Product Improved Portability –Reduction of Size –Ergonomic Design –Rechargeable Battery Improved Robustness – –Withstand a drop of 5 feet – –Waterproof for use in all weather conditions
