4 E 3 Symposium The Implementation of Research Assignment Overview: The E 3 program provides an opportunity for educators to gain firsthand research experience in college of engineering at the Texas A&M University. The part of research experience will be implemented as an enrichment project in math curriculum at Reagan High School.

5 E 3 Symposium The Implementation of Research Assignment Purpose of Project: 1. Provide an opportunity for students to explore and discover the field of electrical and computer engineering. 2. Allow students making connections with math and science and understand how the subjects can be applied in engineering field. 3. Nurture and foster students’ algebraic reasoning and analytical skills to improve the academic performance. 4. Use simulation software and hands-on activities to promote real life engineering learning experience.

6 E 3 Symposium The Implementation of Research Assignment Objectives: Have basic understanding on CMOS Circuits. Use CMOS Circuits to design a circuit system which has basic logic functionalities.

7 E 3 Symposium The Implementation of Research Assignment More Objectives: Analyze the circuit functionality and performance through hand (graphical) analysis. Verify the circuit through PSPICE simulation.

8 E 3 Symposium The Implementation of Research Assignment Target Students and Proposed Timeframe of Project: The project will be implemented in four PAP Algebra II classes. Students are usually either tenth or eleventh graders. The project will take about 2 to 4 weeks to complete. Since there are 8 computers available, students will be divided in to 8 groups. There are 2 or 3 students in each group. They are about 100 students will participate this project.

9 E 3 Symposium The Implementation of Research Assignment Educational Standards (TEKS) Algebra I (9) Quadratic and other nonlinear functions. The student understands that the graphs of quadratic functions are affected by the parameters of the function and can interpret and describe the effects of changes in the parameters of quadratic functions. Algebra II (6) Quadratic and square root functions. The student understands that quadratic functions can be represented in different ways and translates among their various representations.

10 E 3 Symposium The Implementation of Research Assignment Details of Project (Lesson Plans): Unit 1: Background and Principle of Integrated Circuits Length of time: 30 minutes Objectives: Students will be able to know the history and background about the invention of semiconductors. Students will be able to gain some basic understanding on CMOS Circuits. Assessments: Students need to draw the diagram of nMOS and pMOS and briefly describe how the two types of integrated circuits work.

12 Details of Project (Lesson Plans): Unit 2: Conversion between Binary and Decimal System Length of time: 60 minutes Objectives: Students will be able to covert a number between base-2 system (binary) and base-10 system (decimal). Assessments: Students needs to complete the worksheet and online tutorial for the binary and decimal system.

13 E 3 Symposium The Implementation of Research Assignment Details of Project (Lesson Plans): Unit 3: Familiarize PSPICE Software for Circuit Design Length of time: 270 minutes Objectives: Students will understand the working principle of basic nMos and pMos circuits. Students will be able to use PSPICE to complete basic circuit design. Assessments: Students needs to create 2 completed nMOS and pMOS simple circuits in PSPICE Schematic.

A transistor is made of a solid piece of a semiconductor material, with at least three terminals for connection to an external circuit. A voltage or current applied to one pair of the transistor's terminals changes the current flowing through another pair of terminals.

When a voltage potential difference exists between the conductors, an electric field is present in the dielectric. This field stores energy and produces a mechanical force between the plates.

19 E 3 Symposium The Implementation of Research Assignment Details of Project (Lesson Plans): Unit 4: Use PSPICE to Simulate, Analyze and Verify the Outcome of Students’ Design Length of time: 240minutes Objectives: Students will be able to use PSPICE to simulate, analyze and verify the I-V characteristics for a basic circuit of nMOS and pMOS. Assessments: After students complete the PSPICE simulations, they need to have written reports on the I-V characteristics for a basic circuit of nMOS and pMOS.
