Introduction to Multimedia What is Computer Multimedia? Use of computers to present text, graphics, video, animation, and sound in an integrated way. Where can it be used? Nearly all PC’s are capable of displaying multimedia, but the resolution available depends on the power of the computer’s video adapter and CPU.

Subcategories of multimedia  What is 3-d software? The category of software that represents 3-dimensional objects on a computer. This includes CAD/CAM, computer games, and animation packages.  What is Animation? A simulation of movement created by displaying a series of pictures, or frame. Cartoons on television is one example of animation. Animation on computers is one of the chief ingredients of multimedia presentations. There are many software applications that enable you to create animation that you can display on a computer. NOTE: The difference between animation and video. Where video takes continuous motion and breaks it up into discrete frames, animations start with independent pictures and puts them together to form the illusion of continuous motion.

QuickTime:  A video and animation system developed by Apple Computer. QuickTime is built into the Macintosh operating system and is used by most Mac applications that include video or animation. PCs can also run files in QuickTime format, but they require a special QuickTime driver. QuickTime supports most encoding formats, including Cinepak, JPEG, and MPEG. QuickTime is competing with a number of other standards, including AVI and ActiveMovie.

ActiveMovie:  A multimedia streaming technology developed by Microsoft. ActiveMovie is already built into the Internet Explorer browser will be part of future versions of the Windows operating system. Supporting most multimedia formats, including MPEG, ActiveMovie enables users to view multimedia content distributed over the Internet, an intranet, or CD-ROM. ActiveMovie's main competition is the QuickTime standard developed by Apple Computer.

RealVideo :  A streaming technology developed by RealNetworks for transmitting live video over the Internet. RealVideo uses a variety of data compression techniques and works with both normal IP connections as well as IP Multicast connections.
