4 Where should we visit?  Universität  Heiliggeistkirche (Holy Ghost church)  Alte Brücke (old bridge) and Brückentor (Bridge gate)  Schloss (the castle)  Philosphenweg  Marketplatz

5 Universität  Founded in 1386  Germany’s oldest University  “Elite University”: successful participation in Nationwide Initiative for Excellence among German Institutions  Want to do an Exchange Program? You should study some German… All courses are taught in German, and tests are given in German. Or you can take German courses during the summer.

6 Heiliggeistkirche (Holy Ghost church)  Built between 1344 and 1441  Tower completed in 1544  Until 1623, the galleries contained Europe’s largest collection of handwritten books and documents (the “Bibliotheca Palatina”)  From 1706 to 1936 the church was divided by a wall through the middle: one side held Lutheran masses, the other held Catholic masses

7 Alte Brücke (Old Bridge)  The Bridge  First bridge was constructed by Karl Theodor around 1788  Rebuilt 9 times due to flooding  Brückenaffe (bridge monkey)  “Why are you looking at me? 9 Schloss continued…  Castle Gardens built in 1616-1619; destroyed during the second world war  Castle also houses the Heidelberg Tun (World’s Largest Wine Barrel): 7 meters high, eight and a half meters wide, holds 220,000 liters (58,124 gallons)  Three times over the summer it is lit up, and there are fireworks: represents the three times the castle went up in flames (two wars and lightening)
