LEVELS OF ABSTRACTION: More than computer science buzzwords

Allow Frank, Vanessa, and Sarah to speed up their computers in a way that works for them The solution must – Allow access to varying levels of detail – Be considered safe to use – Be easy to learn – Be quick to complete GOALS

DEMO

Usability Issue: Users were not provided with enough information to form appropriate conceptual models of the automatic or manual processes AUTOMATIC/MANUAL ORIGINAL DESIGN

AUTOMATIC/MANUAL CRITIQUE Lack of information lead users to form faulty conceptual models Automatic= “a guide through like my tax software” Manual= “probably too complicated for me”

AUTOMATIC/MANUAL REDESIGN

Design Decision Design Heuristic Design Issues User control and freedom Users often choose system functions by mistake and will need a clearly marked "emergency exit" to leave the unwanted state without having to go through an extended dialogue. Support undo and redo. User Confusion During testing, users were confused and unsure what they could or should do from here.

AUTOMATIC SUMMARY ORIGINAL DESIGN REDESIGN Usability Issue: o Users believe they can and want to decide whether they accept changes made by automatic process o Users can undo and redo changes made

DISC CLEAN UP ORIGINAL DESIGN Usability Issue: o Confusion about files o Intimidating and decision intensive (one user even skipped!)

Word Document E-mail Attachment My Files I save it I download it Files needed for the computer to run I should not touch these I decide if I need them anymore Deleted Files Computer Files Concept Models: Concept Model for Disc Clean Up: “I put them there” “I thought it would be like defragmenting and get rid of unnecessary things” DISC CLEAN UP CRITIQUE

DISC CLEAN UP REDESIGN

STARTUP CLEAN UP Usability Issue: o Users could not tell the initial or changed status of each process ORIGINAL DESIGN REDESIGN o Current and possible states for each process are visible

Usability Issue: Learn More content was either never accessed or left users still feeling confused LEARN MORE ORIGINAL DESIGN

What do users anticipate Learn More is? That’ll just be a big block of text I don’t understand. Why should I make a process not run on startup? What are users thinking when we expect them the use Learn More? How do I know if I need to perform disc clean up? Revisiting Concept Models: LEARN MORE CRITIQUE

o Users don’t have to search through a big block of text to the answer to their specific question. o Users can keep answers to questions up while they work on speed up step. o Acknowledges that users may be asking questions while considering screen. LEARN MORE REDESIGN
