2 What is literacy? The ability to read, write, visually represent, and use numeracy, to handle information, express ideas and opinions, make decisions, and solve problems.

3 DANCE AS A MEANS TO LITERACY OUTCOMES Dance can pair with other subject areas. Dance activities help students develop problem-solving skills. Dance allows students to recall, respond, and reflect. Dance provides an arena in which personal creative style is developed.

4 Two areas come together. Dance can pair with other subject areas. Pairing with subjects such as math, science, and history, allows for crossover skill and literacy acquisition.

5 Learning is solving. Dance activities help students develop problem-solving skills. Both individual and group projects will aid in allowing students to code and encode forms through which meaning is conveyed.

6 Revisiting the three “R”s. Dance allows students to recall, respond, and reflect. By being involved in the dancemaking, students will understand sequencing firsthand.

7 Celebrate uniqueness. Dance provides an arena in which personal creative style is developed. Each student has a unique movement style that can be fostered within the dance environment.
