2. Driving Forces ILL has a long tradition of adapting technology to meet the demands of patrons. Electronic delivery is the newest demand. Convenience Speed

3. Practice Acrobat PDF (Portable Document Format) Acrobat Readers are freely available. PDF’s can be delivered two ways: Sent as an e-mail attachment to the patron. Posted on a library sever, via the web. Web Delivery is less problematic.

4. Practice Copyright concerns are managed by automatically removing the articles from the server. Web Delivery, like Fax or Ariel, is a “delivery mechanism”.

5. Benefits of Electronic Delivery Convenience Patrons receive articles on their desktop. Speed As soon as article has been posted to the web, it’s available. Turnaround time reduced by days. More efficient for borrowing library. No need to process incoming Fax, Ariel, or mail.

6. Vision A few high-performing libraries offer electronic delivery in the mid 1990’s. SRLF and UC San Diego experiment with electronic delivery in 1995/96. Hardware and software limitations Labor intensive process. Operators needed a great deal of Acrobat and FTP knowledge. Fax and Ariel were more efficient at the time.

7. Vision Claire Bellanti heads the Desktop Delivery Project for the UC Resource Sharing Committee in January 2000. CDL provides funding and mandates Web Delivery in July 2001.

13. Future of Web Delivery CDL allows user to select Web Delivery April 2002 More campuses need to provide the service before we can publicize. Fretwell Downing VDX VDX will update and close requests. Prediction: Electronic delivery will become ILL standard, replacing photocopy, Ariel, and Fax.
